Many people make the mistake of thinking that the way to live a life of freedom and joy is through positive affirmations and positive thinking, but the truth is, that will only get you so far. The reason is that there’s a core root to the reason you’re not already experiencing freedom, joy and fulfilment.

Children are naturally self-expressed, free and joyful. They also express their feelings very deeply when they’re sad, frustrated, embarrassed or angry. After throwing a tantrum, usually, they’re able to bounce right back and spend the rest of the day joyful and playful. You only start to see a consistent lack of expression of joy as they get older and move into adulthood.

Want to know what the difference is? Not fully expressing ourselves and our feelings is a learned behaviour. Our natural state of being is to fully feel, express and process our emotions as soon as we start to feel them. And once they’re fully processed, then we can go back to having all the fun we want. The difference between children and adults is that adults have learned to stop themselves from feeling the way they do. They’ve attached all sorts of judgments around their feelings, and so they squash them down and bottle them up and continue on with their day. By doing this, they don’t allow their emotions to be processed, and so they stay stuck within their subconscious and within their body.

Eventually, after a whole lifetime of doing this or even just a decade or so, this manifests into physical ailments. As you may already know, we are energetic beings made up of vibrating molecules, and emotions carry a measurable vibration as well. When we don’t allow those emotions to be felt and processed through our body, that vibrational energy gets trapped within our body and compounds over time the more and more we practice pushing down our emotions and not processing them.

Here are 3 tips for shifting into more self-expression so you can get those emotions moving and processed:

1. Ask yourself what you’re holding yourself back from in your life. Many times we’re not able to move into a new way of expressing ourselves because we’re not giving ourselves permission to live the way we want to be living. Ask yourself if this is the way you want to be living your life, and if the answer is no, ask yourself what you’re not giving yourself permission to do, even if the dream seems unrealistic or you wouldn’t even know where to start. Just the fact of acknowledging that releases a layer of resistance.

2. Set the intention of moving in that direction. You don’t have to do anything yet. At this point, you probably don’t even know where to start or what to do, and that’s okay. All we’re doing here in this step is setting an intention and giving yourself permission to move towards your dreams even if you don’t know exactly what they are and you just have a vague sense of the kind of life you want to live. The focus in this step is simply giving yourself that permission and setting that intention.

3. Become determined to live that life. Connect to that version of you who you want to be, paint a picture in your mind of the life you want to live, get into that feeling, and then notice any resistance you have, any tension that arises in your body when you set the intention to have that in your life now. Become aware of that resistance, and consciously choose to become determined to live that life. Consciously decide that the way you’ve been living your life won’t cut it anymore and that you’re going to do whatever it takes to live the life you want to live. Again, we’re not doing anything specific yet, we’re just generating that determination within ourselves.

Now that you’ve gotten the mindset part aligned, you will start to see hints and clues and small steps and opportunities line up for you. When those opportunities come, take them! Realize that you manifested them because you set the intention to do so, and these are your opportunities to step into that life that you desire.

Once you start making those shifts and changes, those repressed emotions will start to come to the surface. This is because as you start to make changes in your life, those old limiting beliefs and subconscious patterns come to the surface in order to be shifted so you can step into the version of you who you need to be in order to have the life you desire.

This is all part of the process of becoming a new person the person who can receive all of the things you want in life. Allow the shifts, allow the emotions to be processed, and allow yourself to shed old perceptions and limitations. Continue to take new actions and follow those new opportunities, and before you know it, you’ll be living the life of your dreams! It’s a journey of exponential growth and exciting adventure seeing just what you can create and how much more you can step into freedom, expression, and joy.
