What is mastery learning?

Mastery Learning is a learning theory coined by American educator and psychologist Benjamin Bloom. This theory has four facets:

  • Individualized instruction

  • Assessments

  • Corrective activities

  • Enrichment opportunities

How can mastery learning apply to personal growth?

You may be wondering why we are presenting an educational learning model for personal development. The reason is that Mastery Learning gives us the time to develop the proper techniques for self-improvement in a healthy and healing way.

The model states that we should continue working on a skill until we become proficient enough to demonstrate a clear understanding. This is not something that is consistently practiced in either the academic or personal development world.

In both arenas, we must develop the ability to apply what we have learned. To apply something means to affect it and relate to it, which is how we determine comprehension. Therefore, Mastery Learning is not only a great model to adopt for personal growth but an essential one, especially given the vast range of options available in this modern age of information.

Why is mastery learning necessary for personal growth & development?

The first reason is simply that it takes time to learn something new and apply it to our lives in a healthy, healing way. Rushing through concepts is not beneficial for anyone, especially adults. As we age, we can become increasingly resistant to change.

This happens because we have acquired many experiences that hardwire us to certain beliefs. Mastery Learning helps us remain flexible and open to other possibilities by training us to stick with something until we understand or "master" it.

Benefits of applying mastery learning to personal growth

The benefits are abundant. However, some are especially significant for breaking through to profound health and healing. Here are a few benefits that Mastery Learning has unveiled in our lives:

Reclaiming free will choice

Choice is a power that all humans have to change their life experiences. We take it for granted when we become so hardwired to a thought, feeling, or behavior that does not serve our health and healing. This is how we fall into various pitfalls that create psychological issues such as victim consciousness, codependency, and forms of abuse.

Unbound existence

The official definition of Unbound Existence is a practice of self-aware liberal education facilitated by you as an individual so that you can develop a personal relationship with yourself, thus creating and mastering yourself. In other words, this isn’t a group effort. It is self-created and self-taught, meaning it is bound only to you and no one else. This form of self-awareness can only lead to deep and healthy self-love.

Respect for all humanity and other forms of life

In the process of Mastery Learning, we learn the value of compassion and empathy. They are not signs of weakness but rather strengths of character. This is because practicing Mastery Learning requires us to develop integrity and unconditional love.

This is no easy feat, as some of us have experienced significant challenges with trauma and abuse. As a result, we naturally extend compassion and empathy to others with balance and discernment instead of masking them with pity, judgment, or victimization.

The inability to bypass issues

Mastery Learning helps us take responsibility for our own lives in an unconventional way. Knowledge in Mastery Learning becomes a tool rather than an identity, allowing us to shape ourselves into whoever we want to be.

Much of our suffering comes from not knowing how to process it. Mastery Learning provides the flexibility needed to navigate difficult thoughts, feelings, and behaviors we have developed over the years.

Conclusion

We wish we could tell you that things will always be alright. Unfortunately, we all fall under the blades of time and chance. There will be heartbreaks, just as there have been in the past. And as we age, we will undoubtedly face grief. These are the prices we pay for love, for only love is worthy of our pain.

However, as we advocate at Soulflwr, the best route to any destination is to go through the process required to get there. Shortcuts often lead to undesirable outcomes. This is how we can become hardwired into believing that change is impossible, even though change is the only constant we have.
