For years, getting found meant one thing. Show up on Google. You optimized your website, worked on your Google profile, chased reviews, and tried to land on the first page. That game is changing fast, and most home service businesses have not noticed yet.

More and more, people are not searching the old way. They are asking. Someone opens ChatGPT or the AI answer at the top of Google and types, "Who is a good plumber near me?" or "Best roofer in my area," and they get one answer instead of a page of links. In BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey, the share of people using AI tools like ChatGPT to find a local business jumped from 6 percent to 45 percent in a single year, making it the third most popular way people find a business. Gartner expects traditional search volume to drop 25 percent by 2026 as this shift continues.

Here is what that means for you. When someone asks an AI for a recommendation, and your business is not in the answer, you do not land on page two. You do not show up at all. So the question is no longer just, "How do I rank on Google?" It is, "How do I become the answer?"

What is actually changing

Traditional search hands you a list. You type a query, you get ten links, you pick one. AI answer engines skip the list. They read the web, decide who fits best, and hand the person a short answer that often names only one or two businesses.

That is a big shift. A list of links gives ten businesses a shot at the click. An answer gives one or two. Being findable is no longer enough. You have to be the business the AI trusts enough to name out loud.

Why does this hit home service businesses harder?

Someone asking an AI, "Who should I call to fix my AC?" is not doing research for fun. They have a hot attic, and they are ready to book. That is about as high intent as a customer gets. If the AI names your competitor instead of you, you did not lose a browser. You lost a ready customer you never even knew existed.

The good news is that AI is not magic, and it is not random. It builds its answers from signals you can actually control. The same fundamentals that help you rank are the ones that get you named. You just have to get them clean.

Keep your business information identical everywhere

AI cross-checks you. It looks at your Google profile, your website, and the directories you are listed in, and it wants them to agree. If your phone number, business name, address, and service area are slightly different across those places, the AI cannot be confident about who you are, and confidence is what gets you recommended.

Pick one exact version of your name, address, phone number, and service area, and make every listing match it, character for character. Boring work. It matters more than ever.

Answer the questions people actually ask

AI surfaces direct answers to direct questions. So put the real questions your customers ask right on your website, with plain answers underneath. How much does a new water heater cost? Do you offer emergency service? How fast can you come out? What areas do you cover?

Most contractor sites talk about the company. The sites that win in the AI era answer the customer. Write the way a person actually asks, and you become the source the AI quotes.

Make your site readable to a machine

A person can look at your site and figure out what you do. A machine needs it spelled out. That means clean, visible text instead of everything buried in images or scripts, clear headings, and structured data in the background that labels who you are, what you do, and where you work.

You do not need to know how to code it. You just need to know it matters and make sure whoever builds your site actually does it. Most do not.

Get real reviews and real mentions

AI weighs reputation heavily because it is trying to recommend someone it will not regret. A steady stream of recent, genuine Google reviews tells you that you are real, active, and trusted. Mentions of your business around the local web help too. This is not about gaming anything. It is about being genuinely well regarded and making that easy for a machine to see.

None of this works if the business underneath is broken

Here is the part people skip. Getting found by AI just sends more ready customers to your door. If your website does not convert them, or nobody follows up fast, you have simply found a more advanced way to waste attention. As I have written before, AI just makes a broken business worse. The businesses that will win over the next few years are the ones that fix the foundation first, then make themselves the answer.

Do both, and you are not just keeping up with the shift to AI search. You are getting recommended by name while your competitors are still trying to rank on a page fewer people are looking at. Remember, the leads you do get still leak out fast if you are slow to respond, so the two go together.

Want to be the answer, not the afterthought

This is exactly the work I do, and it is where a lot of home service businesses are about to fall behind. I work only with home service contractors, one per trade per market, and everything I build, you own. Book a free call with me, and I will show you where you stand in both regular search and AI search, and what it takes to become the business that gets named.
