My holistic approach, rooted in Shotokan Karate and ancient wisdom, forms the foundation for managing life effectively. Cultivating physical vitality (exercise, breathwork) enhances emotional resilience and spiritual presence. By aligning body, mind, and spirit, you can create a stable inner environment that naturally radiates confidence and calm. People who radiate positive energy also tend to look younger than their age and share some distinct traits. Below are some of the most important ones.

Unbreakable spirit

Some people go through tremendous changes, tragedies, and difficulties in their lives but seem to be unfazed by it all and are able to maintain a youthful appearance. So, what is their secret? The conventional wisdom is that stress can kill you, and at the very least, it can have a detrimental impact on your health and vitality.

Since the mind controls the body, having the ability to control one’s emotions and detach oneself from the ups and downs of life can make a huge difference in how well one ages. In fact, a constant state of worry forces the body into survival mode, increasing cortisol levels, the stress hormone responsible for the fight-or-flight response, along with wrinkles, dull skin, and overall exhaustion, which eventually leads to poor health.

Mental toughness and resilience

In traditional martial arts, these are the prerequisites that would allow practitioners to survive not only in the sport but in life. In fact, the only time one is truly defeated is when we quit. If we view any life event as an experience to learn from, then there is no actual defeat. This requires a certain worldview and mental toughness, whereby we continue to move forward despite hardships.

When this state of mind is achieved, our eyes reflect the indomitable spirit within, as does our skin, our walk, and the way we carry ourselves. We have now achieved a kind of resilience that allows us to laugh in the face of adversity.

Embracing change

This requires that we move through life with the kind of curiosity and openness that is almost childlike, which in turn activates a certain energetic level in our body and mind that stimulates the central nervous system in a very positive way.

On the other hand, resistance to change restricts the flow of energy in the body (the Chi), thus creating stressors that can lead to frustration, stagnation, and sickness. This is the kind of energy of someone who is merely existing instead of truly living life to its fullest, and it shows in their face and body when they frown and when they walk.

Those who embrace change do not cling to the past but welcome new experiences. They are lifelong learners who are willing to grow and try new things outside of their comfort zone, where the solutions to most of our problems usually lie. Science also supports the idea that people who learn new skills have greater cognitive abilities and are less prone to age-related illnesses, such as dementia or Alzheimer's.

Expressing emotions

Some people do not express their emotions but keep everything inside as a way to protect themselves from others' judgment and criticism. While in some cases, it is prudent not to share too much information at the wrong time with the wrong people, those who do so as a way of repressing negative emotions tend to carry a heavy burden that ultimately affects their health and longevity. Their faces can actually carry the years of unspoken feelings and repressed emotions, as internal constriction of either sad or happy emotions can affect the level of cortisol and other damaging hormones in their bodies.

On the other hand, emotional release can be considered a natural anti-aging tool. The face is a reflection of the soul, and those who allow themselves to express their emotions naturally benefit greatly from an internal energetic balance and fluidity.

Positive energy

Those who embody positive energy and surround themselves with positive people tend to have a youthful appearance. Their energy goes beyond the conventional vigor of someone who is in shape and reflects an internal state of mind that vibrates at a higher frequency, thus emanating positive qualities that leave everyone around them with a good feeling.

As identified in the Blue Zones, where centenarians live, positive social interactions slow down the aging process. Laughter, genuine connections, and uplifting conversations are all part of the human element that we all need to feel vibrant and alive. Those who are able to tap into this can keep their bodies, minds, and souls energized, vibrant, and youthful well into old age.

Living with passion and purpose

The Japanese call it IKIGAI, which means having a reason to live or a purpose in life. A reason to wake up every morning can provide the motivation and discipline to lead a rich and rewarding life, as too many people get older too soon when they realize they have nothing to live for.

We all have twenty-four hours in a day, but some people are able to live them to the fullest by being engaged in their community, starting a project that helps other people, or finding their passion in the arts and culture, cultivating a hobby that can be rewarding on many levels, like gardening.

When life seems empty and there is nothing to look forward to, it shows on the mind, body, and spirit.

Letting go of the past

Holding on to regret, resentment, and past hurts is a sure way to not live in the present and to burden your body with negative energies, as the mind cannot differentiate between a current real threat and an imaginary one from the past.

When you dwell on things that you cannot change, cortisol levels rise, and so does stress, with the negative consequences of premature aging. Those who are able to stay in the moment and have made peace with what’s behind them are also free to visualize and plan for a positive future.

People who practice forgiveness have lower levels of stress, as they have unburdened themselves from past hurts and disappointments, thus allowing them to move on with their lives in a positive way. They also have a stronger immune system and fewer illnesses, which is reflected in their youthful appearance.

Final thoughts

A radiant, youthful, healthy look and vibrant energy are not the result of lucky genetics but the consistent and determined application of the above characteristics, which are based on a certain lifestyle, relinquishing what does not serve you any longer and adopting a mindset built on these psychological traits.

Becoming a better person and radiating positive energy begins with the inner art of harmonizing body, mind, and spirit, managing your energy, and consciously choosing your mindset. As I underscore in my soon-to-be-published book, The Art of Life Management, by integrating ancient spiritual practices and modern psychological science, anyone can elevate their life and light the way for others to follow.
