Many skills that teen athletes gain from mental performance coaching, such as focus, emotional resilience, and time management, translate directly into academic and personal success. These life skills help teens handle various challenges, making them more adaptable and goal-oriented.

1. Emotional intelligence and self-awareness

Mental coaching emphasizes self-reflection, encouraging teens to understand and manage their emotions effectively. By recognizing emotional triggers, young athletes can respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively; this skill benefits them in relationships, academics, and future careers.


2. Injury recovery support

Injuries can be particularly devastating for athletes, causing physical and emotional strain. Mental performance coaches guide injured athletes through the psychological hurdles of recovery, helping them stay motivated and maintain a positive outlook. Techniques like goal setting and visualization allow injured athletes to focus on their recovery journey and return stronger. Being unwillingly taken out of their sport can be devastating. Athletes often go through the five stages of grief and sometimes need a boost to keep their spirits up and their goals intact.


Injuries often result in isolation and a feeling of helplessness, which can hinder the healing process. A mental performance coach helps athletes stay mentally engaged by setting achievable goals during recovery. For instance, one teen soccer player sidelined for six months due to an ACL injury used visualization and mindfulness to stay connected to the game, easing her return to the field post-recovery.

Mental coaching often includes building interpersonal skills; this helps athletes communicate effectively with coaches, teammates, and family members. By learning to empathize and collaborate, athletes contribute positively to team dynamics and create a culture of mutual support and accountability. Soft skills are not talked about much in practice, yet they are critical to team success.

  1. Practice active listening: When communicating with teammates or coaches, listen actively without interrupting. Good listening fosters better teamwork and stronger relationships.

  2. Stay adaptable: Life and sports are unpredictable; embracing flexibility makes it easier to handle setbacks and changes.

  3. Reflect on your strengths and weaknesses: Self-awareness helps identify areas for improvement while allowing athletes to celebrate their unique talents.


These are only three of the soft skills an athlete needs; there are many more relevant to success in their sport and on their team. My athletes learn which soft skills are important for their sport and how to practice them if they are not already strengths.

Mental performance coaching teaches athletes to take accountability for their actions. This sense of responsibility encourages a growth mindset, where teens learn that mistakes are part of the learning process. By embracing challenges as opportunities, young athletes become more resilient and willing to tackle future obstacles with confidence.
