Everyone is talking about AI taking over the world. But what about the voice inside your own head that has been running the show for years? The one that tells you that you cannot do it, that it is not for you, that you are not ready. Fear and self-doubt are not going anywhere. But they do not have to be in the driving seat.

The fear nobody is talking about

Right now, the world is gripped by AI anxiety. Millions of people are afraid that technology will replace them, make them obsolete, and render their skills irrelevant. While that conversation is important, I want to ask you something more personal. When did you last stop and honestly look at where you are and where you are going in your life?

Because in my experience, the most dangerous limitations are not the ones imposed by technology. They are the ones we impose on ourselves. The stories we repeat so often that they start to feel like facts. The dreams we quietly abandon because we have convinced ourselves they are not for people like us. Fear of AI is real. But the fear living inside your own mind? That one has been running the show for a lot longer.

My own encounter with fear

I know this intimately because I lived it. When I made the decision to leave my marriage, buy a one-way ticket, and build a fully remote coaching business from scratch, the fear was overwhelming. How would I make money? How would I find clients? Who was I to call myself a coach when I had never done this before?

Every single day, my mind offered me a hundred reasons to stop. To go back. To choose the familiar version of life over the uncertain one I was reaching for. Here is what I learned. Fear does not go away when you make a brave decision. It comes with you. The question is whether you let it drive.

Why positive affirmations do not work when you are in fear

Here is something I wish more people understood. When you are deep in fear or self-doubt, your nervous system is in a threat response. Your body is in survival mode. In that state, repeating positive affirmations is like trying to paint over damp walls. The paint will not stick.

Your body does not believe the words because the words have not been embodied. You can tell yourself you are confident, successful, and ready all day long. But if your nervous system is flooded with cortisol and your body is braced for danger, none of those words will land.

This is why so many women try affirmations and feel like failures when they do not work. It is not a mindset problem. It is a nervous system problem. The solution is not more positive thinking. It is regulation first. When the body feels safe, the mind can follow. Not the other way around.

The limitations you place on yourself

People pleasing. Shrinking in rooms you belong in. Saying yes when every part of you means no. Telling yourself that a certain kind of life or success is not for people like you. These are not personality traits. They are fear responses that have been so well practiced that they have become automatic.

Most of us were never taught to question them. We were taught to push through, to be grateful for what we have, and not to want too much. So we learn to keep ourselves small in ways so subtle we barely notice.

Until one day you look up and realise you have been living a life designed by your fear rather than by your actual desires. That is the moment everything can change.

Fear and self-doubt will always be there

Let me be very honest with you about something. The goal is not to eliminate fear and self-doubt. That is not possible. Chasing the absence of fear as a prerequisite for action is one of the most effective ways to never actually move.

The goal is to minimise the grip that fear has over your decisions. To shrink the gap between the moment fear arrives and the moment you move anyway. To build a relationship with your nervous system that allows you to feel afraid and take the step regardless.

I have surfed waves that terrified me. I have sat with the discomfort of pottery when my hands could not do what my mind imagined. I have gone to yoga when my body wanted to stay in bed. Every single time, the practice of showing up for something I loved, something purely for me, taught my nervous system that it was safe to be in a body again.

This is not a luxury. This is not a nice-to-have. Having something you do purely for joy, not for productivity, not for outcomes, not for anyone else, is one of the most powerful nervous system regulators available to you. Especially during seasons of change.

What to do when fear shows up

Here is a simple framework for working with fear rather than being paralysed by it.

  1. Notice where it lives in your body: Fear is not just a thought. It is a physical experience. Before you try to think your way out of it, get curious about where you feel it. Your chest. Your stomach. Your jaw. Naming the sensation interrupts the automatic response and creates a moment of choice.

  2. Ask whether this is fear or wisdom: Not all fear is the same. Sometimes fear is telling you something genuinely important. Sometimes it is just your nervous system meeting something new. Learn to tell the difference. Wisdom tends to feel quieter and more grounded. Fear tends to feel urgent and loud.

  3. Take the smallest possible action: You do not have to leap. You have to move. One message. One decision. One conversation. The nervous system learns that it is safe to grow through evidence, and evidence only comes from action.

  4. Protect your joy: Whatever fills you up, whether that is movement, creativity, being in nature, or something entirely your own, protect that time fiercely. Especially when life is uncertain. Joy is not the reward for getting through hard things. It is the fuel that makes getting through hard things possible.

The work that actually changes things

Inside Unshakeable Woman, my twelve-week coaching programme for women navigating major life transitions, we do not start with strategy. We start with self-leadership.

Because until you understand the patterns running in the background of your decisions, the doubts, the people pleasing, the stories about who you are and what is possible for you, no strategy in the world will stick.

We work on mastering your emotions so they inform your decisions rather than making them for you. We work on rebuilding self-trust so you can hear your own instincts again. We create a real, grounded life plan for the future you actually want, not the one you have settled for. Fear will always be there. But it does not have to be in charge.

One question to sit with

Before you move on with your day, I want to leave you with this. When did you last honestly look at where you are and where you are going?

Not through the lens of what you should want. Not through the lens of what looks good from the outside. But through the lens of what actually matters to you. That question alone, sat with honesty, can change everything.
