Doctor V (aka Verity), is a former medical doctor, turned successful coach, and is here to let us into her fascinating world of relocation coaching. This has become particularly relevant of late where the pandemic has made people re-evaluate their current lives, and where they might want to be.

Doctor V, International Relocation Coach

How does a clinical doctor end up in life coaching?

Not exactly something I planned on doing when I started on the hospital wards! I suppose that I was always the kid at children’s parties who looked after the little ones, rescued the fallen birds and find it extremely rewarding to help others. I took it to an extreme by becoming a hospice specialist, but it taught me a lot. I learnt that when someone knows they’re dying, they often reflect back on their life: regrets, sadness and the happy moments too. It became obvious to me that if I could help people have less regrets, and more happy memories – that’s the part that matters most.

What was it that got you into relocation coaching, and what is it!?

I’m known as ‘The Forensic Coach’, so I love to work with people who have quite complex and interwoven issues. My areas of strength have typically been in career and relationships, but I also have an extreme passion for travel – having been to 55 countries and lived in 5 of them. In my coaching practice, clients would often be wanting to relocate for a new job or with family/ partner, so I soon realised that I had a real knack for coaching them through all that. It’s super niche, but I get really excited about it. It can be incredibly complicated for some people, so it’s no surprise that around 50% of people who do relocate, regret their decision; but if the planning is spot on, it can change lives for the better and in ways that some people had not imagined.

People who are seeking relocation coaching are often in 1 of 2 mindsets:

1. They’ve been thinking about moving for a while, an ongoing niggling feeling inside, but aren’t sure. Through various coaching techniques, I get to understand their lives in 3D technicolour and we systematically put the pieces around this idea of moving. They become very clear about their decision – sometimes it’s just a case of changing aspects of where they currently live, other times they hadn’t realised that they were actually just looking to escape something, or, they solidify their desire to move.

2. They want to relocate, with a 100% conviction. However, whilst toying with a few ideas they either still feel stuck, or worse, end up in a place they hate – either way, in need of some support. I can help from the ideas stage, all the way up to the move-in date. It’s incredibly satisfying to see someone bouncing with joy and starting a new life which is perfect for them.

Do you have any tips that you can give our readers?

The absolute must is to take the time to plan the relocation really, really well.

This is a life-changing decision, but it’s unknown territory and so there’s a real danger of dragging your feet. But rather than being paralysed, my next tip is to start speaking to people who might be able to help you decide what you want and examine your thinking. Beware of any ‘advice’ though, as this is an interpretation of that persons own experiences, and that may not work for you.

Write down all the things that matter to you. Putting these things on paper can also help to crystallise your thinking.

Give yourself milestone deadlines for when you expect to complete the big decisions by, and work backwards from these.

I write a Blog on these things, so feel free to have a look out for other tips there. Plus, I have a few freebies that I give away on my website from time to time which can help.

What’s the next project you are working on?

People often get the most out of me from 1-2-1 coaching, so this is what I’m really loving at the moment. But I also really enjoy blogging, so I’m keen to get back to this, as well as creating more freebies to share useful information with people who find it helpful.

In addition, I’m just finishing up my Diploma in Coaching accreditation and have completed the formal training. The industry is not well regulated, so I wanted to obtain this to formalise things and to demonstrate the best training possible. In fact, honest testimonials feature as part of this, so I’m giving 50% off my fees to anyone willing to offer one following their session(s) with me!

Any other advice?

Before I had coaching myself, I didn’t believe it could be helpful and I got that wrong. I really wish more people could understand the incredible benefits that coaching can offer, in any area of life. Whatever you decide to do however, I would always encourage an open mind, willingness to seek a happier life and the courage to take small steps towards it. Life is preciously short, and it can be taken away in a heart-beat.
