Dewy skin has been a trend for a while now, but what does it mean to have “glass skin,” and how do you achieve it while keeping your skin healthy and happy? Let’s find out.

What Is Dewy Skin?

If you’ve been around skincare fanatics or read beauty blogs and magazines regularly, chances are you’ve heard the term “dewy skin”— probably more than once. Like so many good skincare things, the term originated from Korean beauty trends. You have Chok-Chok, glass skin, honey skin, and cloudless skin, all of which translate to smooth, blemish-free skin with a sheen akin to the morning dew on blades of bright green glass.

K-beauty’s rise to fame was significantly sped up by special media, which is where this term for a fresh-faced look became popular. For those who lived through the 90s, this pleasantly shiny-skinned look was a major pivot from the decades of religiously applying pressed powder that came before it. Beauty magazines (the print version, of course) had long told us all that shine was the enemy and matte skin was the way to a perfect look. K-beauty had other ideas, and they quickly made it into the mainstream of beauty culture.

A dewy face is devoid of layers of powders and heavily applied makeup. It is a clear complexion with just enough “glow” to make you look youthful rather than sweaty. Now, let’s find out how you can achieve this popular look.

Products for Dewy Skin

There are a few essential products that can help maintain a dewy-looking complexion and keep your skin happy and healthy at the same time.

Moisturizer

It should go without saying that a good facial moisturizer is an essential part of any beauty routine, but we thought we’d say it anyway! Moisturizing is essential to preserve your skin's pH balance and help keep it hydrated, which keeps the skin looking fresh and smooth. For a dewy skin look, moisturizing is extra important, as dry and patchy skin is never going to make the cut. Looking for a cream that contains extra hydrating ingredients to lock in moisture and promote a youthful look is a good call. Search for ingredients like:

  • Rose water or extract

  • Hyaluronic acid

  • Vitamin E

These will add and retain hydration and promote smooth skin. Fresh’s Rose Deep Hydration Face Cream is a great facial moisturizer and will prepare your skin for its dewy transformation.

Exfoliator

Exfoliation is another key aspect of the dewy skin look. Stripping away all debris and excess oil that may clog your pores and smoothing away dead skin cells leaves your face fresh and smooth — a brand-new canvas to work with.

We recommend a chemical exfoliator rather than a physical one, as the particles in physical exfoliators can often cause micro tears if you're a little heavy-handed. A chemical exfoliant is to be used once a week or once every ten days, depending on its strength and does the job of a physical exfoliant without any damage to your skin. The Ordinary makes an at-home peel that sloughs off all the things your face doesn't need and leaves you smooth and smiling.

Daily SPF

This should, again, go without saying, but it's so important we’re saying it anyway! Dewy skin relies on a clear, blotch-free complexion, so apply your SPF every day to avoid sun damage and keep your face looking clear and youthful.

Highlighter

Purchase a subtle highlighter to apply to your cheekbones, orbital bones, nose tip, and cupid’s bow. This will be a liquid (our favorite), stick, or powder product that reflects the light, giving your skin a sheen that adds to your already (after all the steps above) smooth and glowy complexion. Less is more with highlighter, so apply it sparingly and add more if necessary.

Eating and Drinking

Drink Plenty of Water

An age-old secret to a perfect complexion and a necessity for your body and skin to remain healthy is to drink lots of water. Hydration should come from within, not just from the products you apply to your face on a daily basis, and there's no substitute for consuming at least 3.7 liters of water every day. It flushes away the toxins and keeps your cells hydrated and your skin plumped and fresh-looking.

Eating Right

Lots of fruit and veggies are also a must because a healthy body is a happy one — and this goes for your skin too! There are a few fruits and veggies that contain things that give your skin an extra glow boost, like

  • Strawberries, because of their vitamin C content

  • Kimchi, to keep your gut balanced — gut and skin health are intimately connected

  • Sunflower seeds, for their protein content

  • Broccoli for its fiber

  • Watermelon for its high (90%) water content

  • Bone broth for its collagen content

  • Tomatoes and blueberries for their antioxidant content
