Whether you're writing content for your brand or working on your next book, you may need help choosing the right time to write or establishing a writing routine that you can stick to. Here are some ideas!

We often hear recommendations on when we should write; for example, we hear about established writers waking up early in the morning before everyone else is up and using that quiet time to allow their creativity to flow without distractions. That sounds like a great idea! And it may be, for many writers out there. But there may be better ideas for you.

It would serve you best to figure out the best time for YOU to write, bearing in mind that what's ideal for someone else may not be suitable for you.

If you do not work very well early in the morning and prefer to write after the kids sleep at night, for ex., go ahead and do just that!

Or if your favorite time of day, when you feel most energized or inspired, is at noon, for 2 hours, then establish a routine of writing then.

You may be someone who does not want to write every day, even though "everyone" recommends that you do, if only for a short period. Instead, you can write for a more extended period, fewer days per week.

You may even choose to take an entire day off every week to go on your very own writing retreat at your favorite cafe or a nearby nature spot and do all your week's writing right then and there (that's how I did it for a few months!).

The point is to try different things out and decide what works best for you. Then, whatever it is that does work, that's the right thing for you (at least for now).

Let's face it, the right time to write is the time that gets us writing! So there is no "right" time to write; there is the right time for you.

When choosing the time of day to write or the number of days, don't let all the suggestions out there deter you or confuse you. The answers are inside you. No one knows what's going on in your life, your preferences, and what motivates you more than you!

Ask yourself the questions below. Answer them as quickly as possible, without giving them much thought, so you tap into your unconscious mind where the answers often are.

  • What time of day feels better to me?

  • What time of day or number of days can I commit to now?

  • When will I have fewer (or no) distractions?

  • When will I have more energy?

  • When/how will I feel more inspired or creative?

  • How much time do I want to spend writing in one sitting?

  • How can I make my writing lifestyle more enjoyable?

Write down your answers, and come up with a plan that takes those answers into consideration. Then, work on that plan and see how it goes.

Feel free to revisit the questions regularly and tweak the plan as you go along! Happy writing!
