These are limiting beliefs, unconscious thoughts that restrict your potential and keep you from achieving your goals. A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that people with strong limiting beliefs experience lower self-esteem and decreased motivation to pursue challenging goals.

1. The silent saboteur: Limiting beliefs unmasked

Limiting beliefs often stem from past experiences, societal pressures, or negative self-talk. They disguise themselves as truths, whispering things like "I'm not good enough," "I don't deserve success," or "This is just the way I am." These beliefs can sabotage your confidence, hinder your efforts, and prevent you from reaching your full potential.


Our brains are wired for safety, and the unknown can feel like a threat. So, limiting beliefs act as a self-sabotage mechanism to keep us "safe" and avoid potential failure.


2. Strategies to shatter your limits


Identify your limiting beliefs

Through self-reflection exercises and coaching conversations, you can uncover the limiting beliefs holding you back. Ask yourself questions like "What stories do I tell myself about my abilities?" or "What fears prevent me from pursuing my goals?"


Challenge and reframe

Once identified, don't accept limiting beliefs as facts. Challenge their validity and reframe them into empowering statements. For instance, instead of "I'm not good enough," try "I am capable of learning and growing" or "I'm not good enough yet, but I'm on the right track."


Repeat and convince

While you may consciously agree with the reframed belief, it's important to convince your unconscious mind. Through repetition, such as affirmations or questioning the outdated belief, you can gradually replace the limiting belief with the empowering one, influencing your thoughts and behaviors.


Seek coaching support

A coach acts as a trusted guide who provides personalized strategies, fosters accountability, and celebrates your progress. Coaching can equip you with the tools and support needed to confront limiting beliefs and replace them with empowering thought patterns.


3. My personal and coaching experience

In my coaching practice, I've seen countless individuals, myself included, overcome limiting beliefs and achieve remarkable results. For example, I used to believe "I need to do everything perfectly, I can't fail". While this might seem positive on the surface, it actually prevented me from taking action because of the fear of failing or not living up to my standards.


Through self-coaching, I identified the root of this belief and reframed it. Now, I strive to be the best I can be, still pursuing excellence, but I understand that perfection shouldn't be an excuse for inaction.This reminds me of Theodore Roosevelt's speech, "The Man in the Arena," which emphasizes the importance of taking action and daring to fail:


“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”
