Thinking about becoming a personal trainer in 2026? This was me six years ago, and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. You’ve probably realized one thing already, there are a lot of courses out there. Some promise fast results, some are cheap, and some look premium but don’t actually prepare you for the real world. After over six years in the industry, I’ve seen it all. Personal Trainers who are “qualified” but can’t coach, and others who dominate the gym floor because they chose the right foundation. So in this article, I’m going to break it down simply, which personal training courses are actually worth it, what to avoid (this will save you money), and what I’d do if I had to start again today.

A man doing push-ups using bars in a gym, assisted by a woman in orange leggings. The setting is a gym with equipment in the background.

What makes a great personal training course?

Before we even look at providers, you need to understand this. A qualification is just a ticket in. It’s not what makes you successful. A good course should give you:

  • Real coaching confidence, not just theory

  • Practical, gym-floor skills

  • Support during and after qualification

  • A clear path to getting clients

Most courses fail on at least 2 of these.

The biggest mistake people make

Most people choose a course based on price, speed, or convenience, and I get it, you want to get started quickly. I had just completed a three-year university degree, so in my case, I had learned to be patient. I knew taking my time would set me up the right way.

The truth is, a cheap or rushed course can cost you years of struggle later. I’ve met countless trainers who:

  • Don’t know how to structure sessions

  • Struggle to speak confidently to clients

  • End up quitting within 6 to 12 months

Not because they’re lazy. But because they were never properly prepared.

Top personal training course options in the UK

Let’s keep this honest and simple. There are a few well-known providers in the UK, including:

  • OriGym

  • Future Fit Training

  • The Training Room

They all offer Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications. But they’re not all equal in terms of support, practical coaching focus, and industry relevance.

My recommendation and why

If I had to start again today, I’d choose OriGym. Here’s why:

1. Strong reputation in the industry: They’ve built credibility by focusing specifically on fitness education, not just selling courses.

2. Practical + career-focused: Their courses aren’t just about passing exams. They’re designed to actually help you become a working PT.

3. Job support: This is "big". A lot of courses leave you qualified, but lost. OriGym actively helps with CV support, job placement, and career guidance.

4. Flexible study options: Whether you want online learning, blended, or full-time. They’ve got options that fit your lifestyle.

What I’d do differently if I started again

When I first got into the industry, I thought, “Once I’m qualified, clients will come.” That’s not how it works. If I could restart, I’d:

  • Choose a course that actually prepares me for real coaching

  • Focus on communication and confidence early

  • Get around experienced trainers faster

Your course is your foundation, so don’t rush that decision.

Becoming a personal trainer can genuinely change your life. It certainly changed mine. But only if you start the right way.
