Executive Contributor Stephanie Lyon

As a pharmacist trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine, a practitioner of Alchemical Feng Shui, and someone who spends significant time traveling by car for both professional and personal reasons, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for how much our environments affect our well-being, especially in transition. Like many environmentally sensitive individuals, I’ve found that travel brings a cascade of unseen challenges: unfamiliar smells, jarring lighting, chemical cleaning agents, energetic residue, and disconnection from nature. Over time, I’ve developed a set of portable practices, part energetic, part practical, to support myself on the road. This is more than a list of travel hacks. It’s a way of being in relationship with space, wherever I go.

A cozy windowsill display features lit candles, crystals, a potted orchid, and a decorative gemstone tree, creating a warm and serene ambiance.

These practices are grounded in the wisdom of Alchemical Feng Shui, which recognizes that our outer environments deeply affect our inner states and that we can actively shape them. The goal is simple: negate toxicity and uplift vibration using intention, presence, and select items that support our current needs.

Environmental detox: Clearing the four disruptors

Many hotel rooms or temporary spaces feel “off” because of the presence of subtle but impactful environmental stressors. Here’s how I clear and reset the four main disruptors:

  1. Sound: Use white noise apps, nature sounds, or vibrational music with a portable speaker.

  2. Chemical: Detox sprays, charcoal bags, and open windows (if outdoor air is clean) can refresh the space.

  3. Smell: Personal essential oil spritzers can neutralize and uplift mood.

  4. Light: Use amber nightlights, blue cloths over screens, and cover or unplug electronics.

Fresh air & natural grounding

Whenever possible, step outside shortly after arrival. Fresh air, sunlight, and contact with the living earth recalibrate the nervous system and help release travel stress. Even opening a window or door for a few minutes can help clear stale energy, as long as outside air is free from pollutants, chemicals, or disruptive noise.

Intentional objects to raise vibration

Travel with a kit of energetically charged items: essential oils (like cypress, frankincense, or citrus), a colorful cloth, flower essences (such as Walnut or Rescue Remedy), affirmation cards, and portable spritzers. Each item should hold a personal intention or energetic purpose.

Morning and evening energy rituals

Morning reset:

  • Open a window or use energizing spritz

  • Apply essential oil to pulse points

Acupressure: Kidney 1 (Yongquan), located on the sole of the foot, in the depression between the second and third metatarsal bones. Tap or massage for grounding. This point helps start the day rooted, but can also ease the transition into sleep.

Mantra: “I start this day rooted, resilient, and ready.”

Evening clear:

  • Use a calming spritz

  • Cover or unplug screens/devices, use a blue cloth or EMF covers

Acupressure: Yin Tang (between the eyebrows). Stroke downward to calm the mind or gently hold without movement to center. For focus or visualization, stroke upward or hold neutrally while envisioning the color yellow.

Mantra: “I release the day and return to my center.”

The travel feng shui kit: My essentials

  • Charcoal air purifiers or portable air filters

  • Amber nightlight(s)

  • Blue cloth for TV/screens

  • Essential oils and spritzers

  • Sound playlist and speaker

  • Mantra card or affirmation badge

  • Flower essences

  • Acupressure point knowledge

Coming home to yourself, wherever you are

Intentional travel isn’t just about what you bring. It’s how you engage with the space. Small acts, opening a window, placing a cloth, whispering a mantra, can transform any room into one of restoration and insight. A personalized Alchemical Feng Shui Travel Kit can be created based on your specific current intentions, including spritzers, acupoints, and affirmations. Even in transit, you can be supported, grounded, and whole.
