Have you ever found yourself driving on a highway and suddenly felt anxious about your surroundings or claustrophobic in your car? Maybe you have experienced moments of intense stress to the point you felt short on breath, dizzy, and excessively worried. These are the signs of an anxiety attack.

The American Psychological Association defines anxiety as an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts, and physical changes like increased blood pressure. Those unchecked emotions can interfere with your daily life and become more intense and disruptive. They can also lead to many health problems like depression, digestive issues, extreme fatigue, muscle aches, and pains. One of the most common causes of anxiety is prolonged stress and burnout.

So, what can you do to stop those anxious thoughts and feelings from overtaking your daily life?

3 Tips on How to Stop Anxious Thoughts and Feelings

1. Don't ignore your emotions

Very often, we dismiss our emotions because they feel uncomfortable. However, pretending that nothing is going on and masking them can lead to chronic stress in the body and even addiction. Negative thinking patterns can eventually manifest in your physical body as chronic health symptoms. That back pain that you experience every time you get stressed, insomnia, or headaches after a long day at work are just some of the symptoms.

Deeply connecting with yourself can help you identify where these emotions are coming from and what is at the root. Give yourself time and space to feel your emotions. Bring them to the surface. Express them by crying, talking to a good friend, journaling.

2. Focus on your spiritual life

Our spiritual life, mind, and body are all connected. By exploring your connection with the higher power, you can find peace and hope beyond your current situation. Cultivating positive beliefs, prayer, and meditation can help you cope more effectively with stress in your life, especially when symptoms of anxiety strike.

You can improve your spiritual health by identifying the things in your life that give you a sense of inner peace, comfort, strength, love, and connection. Setting time every day to read inspirational books, take nature walks, think, and pray may help calm your nervous system and build resilience to stress.

3. Support your physical body with healthy foods

When stressed out, you tend to crave highly processed comfort foods. However, consuming unhealthy foods can increase stress in the body. Processed foods are high in sugar, sodium, and unhealthy fats. They can provide a quick energy boost, but they can also make you feel more irritable and anxious.

By choosing healthy whole foods instead of highly processed foods, you can balance your mood and energy, helping you feel more in control. These whole foods should include a variety of vegetables and fruits, nuts, seeds, whole grains, pasture-raised animal proteins, and some fish. Also, balance your meals with proteins, fibre, healthy fats, and complex carbs. They can help you maintain energy throughout your day, have a stable mood, and keep your mind clear.
