Sonya Black

Coach and Psychotherapist

Sonya Black is a BABCP Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist and trained Family Mediator who has spent over 20 years helping people navigate some of life's challenges and most difficult transitions. With extensive experience across NHS and private practice, including specialist trauma services, Sonya bridges the gap between psychological insight and practical support.

Sonya works at the intersection of psychology, mediation, and family law. She supports individuals and couples through trauma-informed psychotherapy and coaching, helping them move from chaos to clarity, from conflict to cooperation, and from overwhelm to grounded decision-making. She also provides specialist training and consultation to family law practitioners and businesses, equipping solicitors, barristers, mediators, HR professionals, and organizational leaders with trauma-informed frameworks that improve outcomes, enhance workplace wellbeing, reduce complaints, and build resilient, psychologically informed, engaged teams.

Her work is grounded in a simple but powerful understanding, divorce is not just a legal process. It is a neurobiological, emotional, and relational transition that affects every aspect of a person's life.

When the brain and nervous system are in survival mode, clarity becomes nearly impossible. Decision-making falters. Communication breaks down. The legal system can inadvertently become an additional source of trauma rather than a pathway to resolution.

Her approach is rooted in compassion, neuroscience, and two decades of clinical experience. Whether working directly with clients navigating divorce, training the professionals who support them, or helping businesses develop trauma-aware workplace cultures, Sonya's mission is the same: to transform difficult transitions into carefully held processes that prioritize healing, agency, and long-term wellbeing and good mental health, so that people can live the life they want and choose.

The Hidden Psychology of Divorce

Divorce is often considered a legal process, yet for the individuals involved it feels highly emotional, visceral.  When your life is unravelling, everyone tells you to ‘make good decisions.’
