Brian R Basham

Counsellor

Brian has a long life history that he brings to the broader community. His life focus was policing, and he served in uniform for 13 years in two states. His policing career ended as a result of work-related injuries, including a brain injury. After some time away, he returned to Victoria Police as a public servant for nine years, including seven years as an instructor at the Victoria Police Academy.

In line with his life motto, refuse to lose, Brian went on after his injuries to attend university and attain a number of post-grad qualifications in adult education and counselling. His current PhD research investigates the impact of management decisions and behaviour on the mental health of employees, with a research cohort of retired police officers. He has researched the development of critical thinking in the emergency services, and this has led to the development of a framework for identifying critical thinkers and how they can be assessed and developed.

He has a passion for men’s mental health, as he has seen a gap in this area, specifically in rural and regional Australia, where he resides.
