In the 1990s, résumés were printed on crisp white paper, written in Times New Roman, and handed out in person. They were static, lifeless, and only came into play after an opportunity was identified. Fast forward to today, and somehow, many professionals are still treating their LinkedIn profiles the same way.

A confident woman dressed in a stylish blue suit poses against a gradient blue background next to bold text that reads, “Your LinkedIn is not a résumé. It’s a reputation engine.” The name "Tati Rainer" and her logo appear at the bottom.

They copy-paste a dry résumé summary.

List past job titles like a grocery list.

Use generic buzzwords like “results-driven professional” that say everything and nothing at the same time.

And then they wonder why nothing’s happening.

Here’s the truth: LinkedIn is not your digital résumé. It’s your digital reputation.

It’s the first thing people see when they hear your name.

It’s your stage. Your sales page. Your storytelling platform.

It’s how you build trust before the conversation even starts.

So why are so many still stuck in the mindset of “update it when I need a job”?

Let me be clear:

  • If you're a business owner, your LinkedIn is your conversion tool.

  • If you’re a job seeker, it’s your visibility tool.

  • If you're a leader, it’s your influence amplifier.

  • And if you're not leveraging it. You're leaving growth, money, and credibility on the table.

Here's what you should be doing instead

  1. Turn your About section into a story, not a summary.

People don’t connect with bullet points. They connect with you.

  2. Speak directly to your audience.

If you're looking for clients, make your services clear. If you're job hunting, show the impact you've had, not just tasks you’ve performed.

  3. Think “personal brand,” not “job history.”

The way you show up online is the way people perceive your value. Own it.

If your LinkedIn still feels like something you wrote in a Word doc 10 years ago, it's time for a refresh. The platform has evolved and so should you.

Want help turning your LinkedIn into a magnet for opportunity?

That’s what I do. Send me a message on LinkedIn.
