There has been a lot written about spirituality and like-minded concepts in the workplace. This is an idea that spans the whole history of self-development. Yet, it seems somehow more powerful than ever as more and more people realize that work is more than just profit and paycheck.

Certain misconceptions have to be cleared away to understand what is meant by spirituality: it is not only about your church, your god, or your rules of behaviour.

Spirituality is an immense topic that involves a multitude of applications and processes.

Even after all that, it remains an infinite source of inspiration, creativity and caring. A basic definition of spirituality may be 'our concern for things within us that are greater than ourselves and linked to the universe as a whole.

Spirituality in the workplace has been defined by Giacolone and Jurkiewicz (2003) as "a framework of organizational values evidenced in the culture that promotes employees' experience of transcendence through the work process, facilitating their sense of being connected to others in a way that provides feelings of completeness and joy."

Now that we have an idea of what spirituality in the workplace is, let's see what it does for us:

  • Spirituality in the workplace creates satisfaction and trust between colleagues. When an employee finds a deeper purpose in their job, it facilitates collective efforts that are more on-point.

  • Employees can express individual growth and fulfillment. Greater access to our most important values creates a learning-rich, growing environment in which participants can better themselves and their companies.

  • These highly-motivating values can add a new dimension to your brand in a way that strengthens your company's commitment to the community, the environment, and education.

Now that we have a sense of why we should embrace spirituality, how can we bring more of it to the workplace?

  • Be mindful. Think about the things you've done in the past few days and how you could have done better. Think about your actions and whether they reflect your true self or only an incomplete reflection.

  • Be positive. Don't let negativity creep into your mindset. Practice being optimistic and seeing positive outcomes in your work and life. As you practice and become more skillful, these ideas will merge into one powerful force for good.

  • Meditate and take up yoga. Take some time for personal reflection. Try journaling. Practice them at work. See if you can get colleagues to join you. These activities will broaden and expand the horizon of your awareness so that new ideas will flow naturally and in abundance from your deeper consciousness. Your stress levels will decrease, and you'll be more productive.

  • Be kind. I know what you're thinking ‒ this is too obvious. But, the best thing you can do for yourself in business and life is to spread the seeds of happiness and joy to others.
