What if your purpose in life is revealed by trusting yourself and having the courage to take one step after another? Sometimes, what feels like the destination is preparing us for what comes next.

Is purpose really a destination?

For some of us, purpose is imagined as a fixed destination: A career. A job. A business. A title. A niche. We believe that once we arrive, we’ll feel fulfilled and at peace.

We sometimes become so focused on reaching that imagined destination that we don’t notice what is unfolding in front of us. What if our purpose is revealed not by arriving at a destination, but by trusting ourselves enough to take the next step, guided by our gut feeling and inner wisdom?

Perhaps it begins with listening. Listening to the quiet inner voice that keeps returning. Sometimes it whispers. Other times, it begins to shout, asking us to pay attention, stay present, and remain open to what comes next.

What if purpose unfolds one stepping stone at a time?

Like many people, I had a vision for the life I wanted to live. What I couldn’t see were the unexpected moments that would quietly, and at times loudly, shape the journey.

Looking back, I realise life was unfolding for me, not against me. I just couldn’t see it at the time. It’s often only in hindsight that we recognise the significance of what we once overlooked.

Learning to trust our inner wisdom can be one of the most empowering choices we make. This isn’t to say purpose can’t be expressed through a career, business, or job. For many people, it is.

It’s simply an invitation to stay open to the possibility that it may also unfold in unexpected ways. Perhaps what we once believed was the destination was simply the right place for a season of life, until something new began to emerge.

When inner wisdom challenges the plan

The challenge is that the next step doesn’t always make sense. Your intuition may encourage you to apply for a job that seems unrelated to your long-term goals.

It may invite you to start a conversation with someone you’ve never met. It may ask you to volunteer, enrol in a course, move house, begin something new, or slow down.

Immediately, the mind begins its protest: “That doesn’t fit my plan.” “People will think I’m going backwards.” “I have responsibilities.” “What if it doesn’t work?”

So we ignore our inner wisdom. We push it away, even when it keeps returning. We often silence our inner wisdom because it doesn’t match the story we’ve created or the expectations of those around us.

Why? Because many of us are taught that life is about avoiding discomfort and pursuing happiness as the ultimate goal.

Yet perhaps life isn’t asking us to avoid discomfort. Maybe it’s asking us to trust that discomfort isn’t the end of the story. Sometimes, beneath it is the growth that brings us back to ourselves.

When life takes you somewhere unexpected

Years ago, I was working in a training position that was due to finish within days, and I needed to find another job.

One day, I came across an advertisement in the local paper for a position in a particular industry in a neighbouring town. The advertisement didn’t name the business, but I knew there were only two businesses in that industry.

I visited the first business, but it had no positions available. The second business was directly across the road.

I handed in my resume and was asked to take a seat while a staff member spoke with the manager. As I sat in that waiting room, an incredible sense of peace came over me. I can’t explain it any other way. I simply knew I was exactly where I was meant to be.

This was the business the advertisement had been referring to. I was offered the position and remained there for the next five years.

Looking back, I realise it wasn’t just about finding a job. Those years became a pivotal point in my life. I later recognised that I had been guided there for a reason. During that time, I met someone who would support me through one of the most challenging periods of my life.

Why the next step can matter more than the whole path

Sometimes we know, deep down, that we’re being called in a particular direction. Yet fear of disappointing others or stepping outside expectations keeps some of us standing still.

We continue living a life that looks right from the outside while quietly wondering what might have happened if we had trusted ourselves. Or, perhaps even more heartbreakingly, we quietly let the dream slip away without ever discovering where it may have led.

That doesn’t mean every intuitive whisper should be acted on without thought or discernment. It does mean we can become curious enough to listen and explore what might be possible.

Sometimes one small step is all that’s required. One conversation. One application. One phone call. One decision. One act of courage.

From stuck to shifting

What happens when we feel like we’re taking action on the stepping stones appearing before us, yet the outcome we’re hoping for still doesn’t unfold?

At times, we push and push, trying every possible way to create the outcome we want. Frustration begins to build, and what once felt like flow can start to feel like forcing. Perhaps that’s a sign that it’s time to stop forcing.

To stop forcing doesn’t always mean stopping action altogether. Sometimes it means stepping away to reassess what is working and what isn’t.

Sometimes, stepping away allows us to see the bigger picture. We begin to notice what we may have been missing and gain a deeper understanding of why things haven’t yet fallen into place. Perhaps the next stepping stone hasn’t revealed itself yet, or maybe we’re only seeing part of it.

One of the clearest signs I’ve noticed that I’m returning to flow is when the gap between some of my thoughts and their manifestation in reality becomes shorter. Then something shifts.

I don’t always know when or why, but a quiet inner knowing returns. The signposts become clearer. The next step no longer feels forced.

Sometimes the next step becomes clearer, not because we tried harder, but because we stopped forcing what wasn’t flowing. When we find the courage to listen to our inner wisdom and take the next step, life often begins arranging circumstances in ways we could never have orchestrated ourselves.

Opportunities appear. The right people arrive. What once felt like mountains somehow begins to move. Places where we once felt stuck can begin to shift.

Listening to our inner wisdom isn’t always comfortable. The path can be unpredictable. There can be potholes, unexpected turns, steep climbs, and moments when you wonder if you’ve lost your way.

But I’ve also found that it leads to a life that feels more like your own. Not perfect. Just more true. Less stuck. More shifting. More like you.

Maybe the path is the purpose

Perhaps your next stepping stone doesn’t look like the one you expected. Maybe that’s exactly the point.

The stepping stones aren’t taking you away from your purpose. They’re revealing it. Trust doesn’t require seeing the whole path. It simply asks you to take the next step.

Perhaps the journey was never about reaching a destination. Maybe it’s about discovering the courage and self-trust within you to let your inner wisdom guide you on your path, so you can come home to the real you.
