Mental health impacts how we think, feel, and what we do. It is becoming increasingly important for people to consider how they handle their mental health and well-being. Mental health treatment often considers therapy and medication management. While therapy typically includes weekly individual, group, couples, and family sessions, these services are provided by a therapist.

What makes therapists unique is they are trained professionals who learn about different ways to help other people overcome mental health concerns. Now, what a lot of people do not know is that therapists are not mandated to engage in therapy for themselves. As part of being a group of people who specialize in mental health, therapists are not excluded from having mental health concerns on their own.

Reasons why therapists do not attend therapy

  • No insurance

  • Concerns about mental health diagnosis

  • Negative stigmas from other people

  • Worrying about their career goals/job stability

  • Limited/lack of mental health accommodations

For many, that could easily be the reason a person does not engage in therapy for themselves. At the same time, several therapists do decide to engage in therapy for themselves. What is great is that providing counseling to other therapists has been very rewarding. During this time, a list of tips has also been created to help others working towards their wellness journey.

Wellness tips for therapists

  • Be honest with yourself

  • Vent our counselor before engaging in therapy

  • Ask questions about your treatment options

  • Decrease exposure to negative things (verbal/written materials)

  • Attend a support group (specific to one's own needs)

  • Learn grounding and/or relaxation techniques

  • Adjust your self-care routine

  • Prioritize your wellness needs

  • Keep your mental health status private and/or confidential as needed

  • Take your mental health seriously!

Understandably, people often want what is best for themselves and worry about making the healthiest decision. To know that therapists are taking steps to maintain their well-being so that they can be supportive is something that can be appreciated. Our path to wellness can be one of the most meaningful experiences. The goal is to use different ways to help ourselves so that we can trust and enjoy our wellness journey.
