Tope Alabi – The Visionary Behind Afriex’s Global Money Revolution

When Tope Alabi first moved to the United States, he often sent money home to support his family in Nigeria. The process was slow, expensive, and unpredictable. “Every time I made a transfer, I lost money to fees or bad exchange rates,” he recalls. “It didn’t seem fair that helping my family cost so much.”

That frustration planted the seed for what would become Afriex  a company now redefining how people move money across borders. What began as a personal problem soon evolved into one of the fastest-growing fintech platforms connecting Africa and the global economy.

How Afriex started

In 2019, Tope and his co-founder, John Obirije, launched Afriex with a simple idea: to make sending money across borders fast, fair, and affordable. They started with the U.S.Nigeria corridor, one of the most active remittance routes in the world. “We saw how much value was lost before it even reached the people who needed it most,” says Tope. “We wanted to fix that.”

Within its first year, the platform gained traction for its zero-fee transfers and reliable exchange rates. By 2020, it expanded into Ghana and Kenya, giving more users access to fair financial tools.

“The name ‘Afriex’ comes from Africa and exchange,” Tope explains. “It reflects our mission to connect people and economies across continents.”

A mission rooted in inclusion

Tope’s leadership philosophy centres on empathy and accessibility. He believes financial innovation should serve people first. “We’re not just building technology,” he says. “We’re solving real problems that affect families every day.”

For many users, Afriex became more than an app, it became a bridge to loved ones. Transfers that once took days now happen in minutes. Customers praised the reliability and transparency that set Afriex apart from traditional banks and legacy remittance providers.

“Every transfer tells a story,” Tope says. “It might help a child go to school or a small business restock its shelves. That’s the human side of what we do.”

Scaling up: Growth and global impact

By 2021, Afriex raised $10 million in venture funding, allowing it to scale operations and expand into new global corridors. The company now serves hundreds of thousands of users and is developing products that help businesses move money just as seamlessly as individuals do.

Between 2023 and 2025, Afriex introduced new features like referral programmes, loyalty rewards, and business FX tools. Tope and his team are also working on travel cards and digital treasury products designed to simplify international trade for small businesses.

“Our focus is on access and efficiency,” he explains. “If you can move money instantly, you can move opportunity instantly too.”

Leadership, lessons, and resilience

Tope’s path as an entrepreneur hasn’t been without challenges. Entering a highly regulated industry meant facing hurdles around compliance, licensing, and trust. “When you’re working in finance, people are trusting you with what matters most,” he says. “That means every detail counts.”

He leads Afriex with a people-first mindset, both for customers and employees. “Listening is the key,” Tope says. “Our users tell us what they need, and our team brings those ideas to life. That’s how we keep improving.”

His approach has earned him a reputation as a thoughtful leader in fintech someone who balances innovation with social impact. “You can’t innovate without understanding people,” he notes. “Technology is only powerful when it’s used to solve real problems.”

The bigger picture: Financial inclusion

According to the World Bank, global remittances to low- and middle-income countries reached $656 billion in 2023, a critical source of income for millions of families. Yet the average cost of sending money internationally remains around 6%.

Tope believes this gap is where fintechs like Afriex can make the most difference. “It’s not just about lowering fees,” he says. “It’s about fairness. People work hard for their money they shouldn’t lose it just because they live on the other side of a border.”

Afriex’s mission aligns with this vision: making global finance more inclusive and transparent, especially for underserved communities. “We want to empower the global diaspora,” Tope says. “Because when people can move money freely, they can move opportunity freely too.”

Looking ahead

As Afriex continues to grow, Tope remains focused on the same values that inspired its creation: trust, access, and impact. The company is expanding into new markets, building partnerships, and exploring new financial products to serve both individuals and businesses.

“We started with a problem we lived through,” Tope says. “Now we’re building a solution that millions of people can benefit from.”

For him, success isn’t measured in profits or downloads, it’s measured in lives improved. “If we can make it easier for one more family to send money home, that’s a win,” he adds.

Final thoughts

Tope Alabi’s story is one of perseverance, purpose, and innovation. From humble beginnings to leading one of Africa’s most impactful fintech platforms, he has shown that big ideas often come from everyday frustrations.

“Technology should make life simpler,” he says. “At Afriex, that’s our mission. To build a world where sending money across borders feels as easy as sending a message.”
