Let’s talk about the paradox that seems to drive everyone (including me) absolutely crazy: You want something, when can you have it? When you don’t want it anymore. You want to go forward and nothing works? Try doing nothing or even going backward. You’re waiting for a phone call? When does it come? The moment you’re not thinking or waiting any longer.

The photo shows two brown trail signs: one with a white arrow pointing left, and another below it with a hiker icon, indicating a nearby hiking trail.

Seriously, I’m scratching my head as I write this, and I know I’m not alone.

The FedEx fiasco and the unseen forces

Let me paint you a picture. I was the Health and Safety Manager for a CBS production, post-lockdown, pre-vaccine. We needed to ship 400 COVID-19 tests to a Texas lab. Everything depended on that package, and I was extremely anxious. Then, FedEx lost the package in Memphis. Never happened before, just when I needed it most. Cue the panic. But here’s the kicker: when I surrendered to the situation, with some help of the producers, we were able to reorganize ourselves with a weird sense of calm and it actually saved the day. Like in the past, the more I tried to force a solution, the more stuck I felt. The more I handled a situation with ease, the more effortlessly things fell into place. The moment I surrender, things immediately start moving again.

Spiritual frameworks: Abraham Hicks, David Bayer, and the "law" of non-resistance

Abraham Hicks calls it the Law of Attraction: line up your energy with what you want, and you’ll attract it. David Bayer, whose podcast I love and who is my coach, breaks it down even simpler: Desire + Non-Resistance = Desired Outcome.

Again, the paradox. It’s like the Universe is playing hard to get. Or not? So, is this just spiritual woo, or is there science behind it? Turns out, both.

1. The brain’s battle: Scarcity vs. safety

When we’re desperate, our brains flip into scarcity mode. The amygdala (your brain’s “panic button”) takes over, and suddenly you’re stuck in tunnel vision, unable to see solutions. But when you let go, your prefrontal cortex (the “CEO” of your brain) gets back in the driver’s seat. Studies show that people who practice mindfulness and “letting go” experience less anxiety and more creative problem-solving.

2. The nervous system’s role

David Bayer talks about how unresolved stress keeps your nervous system in survival mode, sabotaging your best efforts. Science backs this up: trauma and chronic stress literally keep you stuck. Healing through breathwork, therapy, or just a good laugh shifts you from “force” to “flow.”

3. Quantum physics: Vibrational alignment

Okay, it sounds out there, but quantum physics suggests everything vibrates at a frequency. Abraham Hicks says you must “become a vibrational match” to your desires. While it definitely works based on my experience (myself and clients), science yet need to catch up, but some studies on electromagnetic fields show our bodies and brains are more sensitive to “vibes” than we realize.

The control-surrender spectrum, let’s break it down

  • Forced Action (Control)

  • Inspired Action (Surrender)

  • Driven by fear, urgency

  • Rooted in intuition, curiosity

  • Activates stress hormones

  • Triggers dopamine, creativity

  • Narrow focus (“tunnel vision”)

  • Expansive awareness (“big picture”)

Recent studies show that people who can let go of obsessing over one outcome and take a more relaxed, flexible approach to their goals often make progress more smoothly than those who stay tightly attached. So maybe Grandma was right: “A watched pot never boils.”

The dark side of “letting go”

Let’s not sugarcoat it, sometimes “letting go” is just spiritual bypassing if you don’t do the inner work. You can’t just slap a positive affirmation on a wound and call it healed.

Neuroscientist James Doty agrees that real change means rewiring your subconscious, not just thinking happy thoughts. Meaning: You really need to let go. Pretending doesn’t work with the Universe.

So, why does letting go actually work?

Here’s my take: When you’re stuck in “I don’t have it, I have to work hard to get it,” you’re running on scarcity. It’s like driving with the brakes on, lots of noise, not much movement. Letting go is shifting gears from “brake” to “drive.” You loosen your grip, let momentum build naturally, and here’s the paradox: start to feel as if you already have what you want. That’s the secret sauce. When you act from a place of “already having,” you become magnetic to what you desire. You stop chasing and start attracting.

Practical integration: How to dance with the paradox

  • Relax and reframe: Instead of “I need this to happen,” try “It would be nice if this happened.” This subtle shift reduces pressure and resistance.

  • Heal your system: Breathwork, therapy, or even a dance break, anything that gets you out of survival mode.

  • Tune into your intuition: Ask yourself, “What can I do right now to help the process along?” Inspired action often feels light, curious, and organic, not forced or desperate.

  • Act from a positive state: Don’t take action when you’re frustrated or anxious. Wait until you feel calm, optimistic, or at least neutral. This aligns your actions with your desired outcome.

  • Embody the outcome: Visualize already having what you want. Neuroscience says this actually rewires your brain.

  • Detach from the outcome: Remind yourself, “If it doesn’t happen, I’ll be okay.” This isn’t giving up, it’s making space for the best possible outcome, even if it looks different than you imagined.

  • Detach with trust: Trust the process. Sometimes the universe has a better plan than you. (And sometimes it just wants to see if you’ll laugh at the cosmic joke.)

The takeaway

Letting go doesn’t mean giving up. It means releasing your grip on how and when things must happen, so you can receive what’s meant for you, often in ways you never expected. The more you let go, the more you receive. It’s not just a catchy phrase; it’s a principle that can transform your career, relationships, and life.

So next time you’re clinging tightly to an outcome, try loosening your grip. You might be surprised at how quickly things fall into place sometimes, all at once, sometimes in small, magical bursts. And if you catch yourself scratching your head at the paradox, just know: you’re in good company.
