Many aspiring authors carry a powerful dream: to share their stories with the world, to be published and heard. However, behind this dream lies an often-overlooked reality: the growing prevalence of pay-to-publish models that profit from these hopes without guaranteeing meaningful returns.

In recent years, it has become increasingly common for publishing and mentorship companies to require authors to pay substantial fees for services that promise publication, mentoring, and exposure.
While mentorship and professional publishing do involve costs, the problem arises when these models primarily serve the company’s financial interests rather than the author’s success.
From my personal experience, I was once naive, driven by passion and a big dream, and entered into agreements that promised publication but left me in debt rather than profit. Although my work was published, the financial burden outweighed any potential returns. It’s a painful reality many authors face, especially those without established industry connections or financial means.
Media investigations have recently begun to shine a light on these business models, revealing how some companies profit by selling hope rather than opportunity. This scrutiny is crucial. It raises awareness of how dreams of becoming a published author can sometimes be commodified, turning a deeply personal aspiration into a transactional relationship that favors the publisher more than the writer.
The consequences are profound. Talented voices and powerful stories risk being silenced, not because they lack merit, but because economic barriers prevent access to genuine publishing opportunities. When authors must pay upfront without fair chances for financial or career returns, it undermines the very spirit of storytelling and creative expression.
What’s worse is when these profiteers turn around and blame those who struggle, calling it an “offer mentality” or “mindset issue.” As if people with real, raw dreams and unbreakable fighting spirits are just lazy or lacking.
This kind of victim-blaming is both cruel and ignorant. It dismisses the humanity, the struggle, and the unstoppable drive in those who don’t have the means but still refuse to give up.
As an author and advocate, I believe we must encourage transparency and fairness within the publishing ecosystem. Publishers and mentors who genuinely invest in authors’ success should clearly communicate terms, uphold their agreements, and share in the rewards. At the same time, authors deserve to be informed, empowered, and protected from exploitative practices.
The dream to be published is precious and should never become a costly gamble. It’s time to rethink how we support authors so that publishing becomes a gateway to opportunity, not a barrier to be overcome.
If you’re an author navigating this landscape, know you’re not alone. Share your experiences. Demand transparency. And let’s work together to create a more just and supportive publishing world, where every voice has a fair chance to be heard.
Yes, our mindset shapes our reality, and we are the creators of our dreams, but never blame the dreamers when the system is rigged.
