Lamar Greene, Full-Spectrum Doula and Spiritual Coach

Introduce yourself! Please tell us about yourself and your life, so we can get to know you better.

Hello! My name is Lamar Greene, and I am from Richmond, Virginia. My upbringing, being raised by a single mother and my maternal grandparents, greatly influenced my path and my life interests around health, healing, and spirituality. I earned my B.A. in Human Health from Emory University in 2019. I was awarded a Truman Scholarship for my research, advocacy, and community service focused on addressing intersectional health disparities. I studied abroad in India to learn about Tibetan medicine, healing principles, and Buddhism. Since graduating, I have deepened my commitment to reproductive justice, which I view as our path to health equity. I have interned with the Center for Reproductive Rights, served as a Truman-Albright Fellow at the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy, worked in Global HIV advocacy with the U=U Campaign, and provided community outreach as a healthcare navigator with the LA County Department of Public Health.

In my personal life, spirituality and herbalism are two things that bring me joy. Spirituality has been central in my healing and becoming journey. I love talking about all things astrology, numerology, and cosmology. I also spent many years doing volunteer community garden work across a variety of settings. I enjoy aromatherapy and herbal medicine making for myself. I started Doula Alchemist Healing at the end of 2023, and it is a tapestry of all my passions and ancestral callings. From 2023 to the present, I have become a Transformation Academy certified spiritual life coach, a Birthing Advocacy Doula Trainings certified full-spectrum doula, and a Commonsense Childbirth Institute mentee. I see my healing practice as a labor of love and my personal contribution to reproductive justice, healing justice, and collective wellbeing.

Can you share the inspiration behind starting Doula Alchemist Healing and your journey into this field?

Doula Alchemist Healing is largely inspired by my mother’s birthing narrative and my having witnessed her navigate reproductive healthcare as a single mother and Black woman. My journey began to really take shape in my junior and senior years of high school. Through Partnership for The Future, a college access program for disadvantaged high school students, I was able to intern at a heart disease prevention lab in my hometown for two summers. I learned how cardiovascular diseases were preventable while simultaneously discovering that my grandmother would have to undergo a double bypass. In reckoning with this reality, I acknowledged my interest in public health and vowed to do what was within my power to prevent this from happening to other families.

Coming to Emory, I studied human health on campus, but so much of my learning also happened outside of the classroom. I volunteered with health insurance navigators at a large safety net hospital and with community health workers at a farmers’ market association to expand access to affordable care and fresh produce. In exploring patient-provider relationships, I created a clinical provider workshop on addressing stigmas around race and sexuality in HIV prevention. I was learning about the social determinants and unequal treatment in healthcare, but everything did not fully click until I read the media articles about the birthing experiences of Serena Williams and Dr. Sharon Irving in my junior year of college.

I saw patterns in their experiences that aligned with my mother’s birthing narrative, particularly treatment from health providers. At that moment, a seed was planted. Moving forward, I researched the perinatal crisis extensively and worked in reproductive health policy, advocacy, and outreach spaces. I have come to understand that addressing the perinatal crisis among Black and Brown women and birthing people, as well as infants, is the first step towards health equity. Pregnancy, birth, and reproductive care experiences have the potential to frame health and development outcomes for the next generation while also being a pivotal point for health across the life course for birthing people. Coming to that understanding while simultaneously experiencing my spiritual awakening led me to unveil my calling to have a more active role in guiding others on their spiritual journeys, providing reproductive care support, and advancing collective care.

What sets your approach to doula and spiritual life coaching services apart from others in the industry?

My full-spectrum doula and spiritual life coaching services stand out due to the combination of being both evidence-based and culturally grounded. Doula Alchemist Healing is deeply inspired by the many contributions of the Black and Indigenous Grand midwives, doulas, and traditional healers. My work is culturally grounded in the sense that the modalities used, including reproductive care work, community herbalism, and divination, pay homage to the example set forth by the Grand midwives and my ancestors. I incorporate herbal education into all of my service offerings, and I weave spiritual care into all of my doula work. My culturally grounded approach also extends to me asking my clients about cultural traditions that are important to them and making sure to incorporate those practices into the care I provide.

Doula Alchemist Healing is also intersectional, trauma-informed, and healing-centered in its approach. My services are greatly influenced by an understanding of how race, gender, sexuality, ability status, and other social factors can impact an individual’s reproductive and healing journey. With this influence, a historical understanding of reproductive oppression, and a fierce commitment to social justice, the core focus of Doula Alchemist Healing also sets my approach apart. Doula Alchemist Healing is devoted to Reproductive Justice and Healing Justice for all while centering Black, Indigenous, and People of Color; Queer and Trans People; Disabled People; and People Living with HIV.

Can you describe the process and benefits of your personalized support plans for clients?

All of my full-spectrum doula and spiritual life coaching services are highly customizable. My process for providing services is pretty simple. People can explore my service offerings on my website, where the descriptions are written with a list of what is included in each service bundle. From there, people can schedule a free 30-minute consultation with me. That is a time for us to meet each other, briefly discuss services of interest, and see if we are a good fit. If we decide to move forward, we start by creating a personalized support plan. I have clients complete an intake questionnaire so I can start assessing their service needs, goals, and current circumstances.

When co-creating a personalized service plan with my clients, I ask about logistics such as when we will meet, where we will meet, and how often. Beyond logistics, I take time to ask about what aspects of my offerings would be most beneficial for them and their lifestyle. I also always ask about any cultural or spiritual practices that clients would like to have honored and find some way to incorporate them into my care work. From there, we begin our journey working together and find time during the process to check in, assess any progress, and make changes to service provisions as needed.

I am really keen on asking people what they need to ensure I’m providing services in ways that are immediately relevant and helpful to the people I serve. The benefits of this approach is that clients receive support in ways that feel good to them. It also allows me to be utilized as a doula and spiritual life coach as part of a network of care with a clear understanding of my scope of work. Having a personalized care plan makes it easier to build relationships with my clients and maximize our time together. It also allows for some sense of transparency around what can be expected, which can lead to increased experiences of trust for everyone involved.

What has been the most rewarding experience or feedback you've received from a client?

One of the most rewarding experiences during my journey as a healer so far would have to be supporting one of my clients through a pregnancy loss. It was completely unexpected. I was actually sending her birth plan resources when she informed me of the pregnancy loss. As a full-spectrum doula who provides support regardless of the outcome, I made sure to provide her with quality care and support, especially seeing that the hospital did not provide her with a ton of resources for postpartum healing. I spent time with her helping to process the experience, and made her some herbal tea during our visits to help bring warmth back to the body. I also made sure to hold space for her while she got connected with therapy and church services, which she expressed interest in having during her healing time.

In tending to her spiritual needs, I asked if she wanted to create a memento to remember the loss. I also created a mini kit for her to have a spiritual bath for cleansing, protection, and renewal once cleared by her doctor. The client later shared with me that I was instrumental in her postpartum healing and recovery. She has since then had a healthy pregnancy, which really warms my heart. I am so grateful to just be able to witness and support people during such intimate parts of their journey. Being able to guide and care for people during intense times of change and transition in their lives is my reason for doing this work.

How do you see Doula Alchemist Healing evolving in the next few years, and what are your future goals for the practice?

I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for Doula Alchemist Healing. I will be relaunching the practice in New York City soon, having moved to Queens for work towards the end of last year. I want to take some time to familiarize myself with the many amazing local resources that are available to my future clients. I want to take some time to connect with other doulas, birth workers, and healers. I believe that doing this work in the community and providing collective care alongside people with similar values is paramount to being successful as a healer. I also want to take some time to establish a doula and spiritual life coaching clientele.

I have been particularly drawn to making postpartum doula work the biggest focus on the doula side of the practice. Seeing that most pregnancy-related deaths occur postpartum and that American culture does not adequately promote the importance of postpartum healing, I think I can have a ton of positive impact in the postpartum space. In building off of my previous client experiences, I will continue to provide postpartum doula support regardless of outcome, whether there is a baby present or not. Beyond that, I’m currently revamping what I want my spiritual life coaching services to look like. In addition to stand-alone sessions, I’m working on the curriculum for a 3-month offering and a 6-month offering.

After getting established in New York City, I envision Doula Alchemist Healing incorporating additional modalities into its full-spectrum doula offerings. I also envision myself offering group spiritual life coaching in addition to individual sessions. I also plan to work with nonprofits, healing centers, and movement spaces to offer group spiritual life coaching and consulting services. I intend to keep writing about reproductive justice and spirituality on my blog site, in other publications, and in future digital products that I sell. Ultimately, I know that the ways I continue to grow and expand as a healer will be reflected in Doula Alchemist Healing. Cheers to the continued growth and evolution!
