Living with integrity is easier said than done, especially in a world where ethics often take a backseat to convenience and self-interest. Reflecting on a deeply personal upbringing rooted in Roman Catholic values and an unforgettable 5 a.m. phone call that tested professional boundaries, this piece delves into humanity's struggle with self-governance.

From a massage mishap to my Roman Catholic roots: Why humanity must grow up

Let me start by saying, I’m a product of a very God-fearing Southern household. My mother, bless her heart, was a devoted Roman Catholic, Creole woman from New Orleans. And let me tell you, there wasn’t a single day in our house that didn’t include a shout-out to “Lawd Jesus, Mother Mary, and the gang.”

She did novenas daily, lit candles like she was setting the ambiance for heaven itself, and prayed for anyone who crossed her path— neighbors, family, strangers, you name it. As a nurse’s aide, she had a special love for caring for the dying. She’d bring them their favorite food or fulfill their last wishes, no questions asked. My mother was a saint in sneakers, but her values didn’t just stop at church; they ran through every part of her life.

And that’s the legacy I grew up with: ethics, morals, integrity, and divinity—woven so tightly into my being that it’s been the reason I’ve spent most of my adult life single. You see, it’s hard to find someone who shares those same principles in a world where most people can’t seem to do the right thing unless someone’s watching.

Take, for instance, the client who called me at 5 a.m. (yes, FIVE AM) to ask for advice about a massage she was giving. I’m half-asleep, thinking, “This better be important.” Turns out, she wasn’t just massaging her BFF, she was considering making it, a little more intimate. Mind you, this is during a professional session. Both of them have boyfriends, but she’s claiming her bisexuality gives her a pass.

Here’s the kicker: she called me because she wanted to know what her BFF / client was feeling and whether she should make a move. I kept my judgments out of the reading, but afterward at around 6am, all I could think was:

  1. What kind of professional thinks it’s okay to make sexual advances toward a client?

  2. Who’s scheduling a massage at 5 a.m. unless you’re up to something shady?

  3. How are we ever going to evolve as a species when people are out here treating boundaries and ethics like optional extras?

Self-governance

The truth is, self-governance—the ability to live responsibly, ethically, and morally without the need for constant oversight—is a tall order for humanity. Most people aren’t ready. Why? Because it requires doing the right thing even when no one is looking, and frankly, that’s not where the majority of folks are operating from.

Now, don’t get me wrong—I’ve met amazing people. But let’s be real: we live in a world where casual sex is sport, kindness is mistaken for weakness, and too many people are looking for a way to take advantage of others. My Roman Catholic upbringing taught me to believe in the goodness of people, but experience has taught me to keep one eyebrow raised at all times.

Here’s the thing, though: we have potential. Humanity can grow. But it’s going to take work. Real work. We need to get better at holding ourselves accountable, at living with integrity, at evolving beyond this obsession with self-interest and gratification.

And let’s not sugarcoat it: the energy of self-governance starts with each of us. It’s a daily practice of aligning with the highest version of ourselves—not out of fear of punishment or judgment but out of a genuine desire to be better.

So, while my mom prayed daily for the world to get its act together, I think it’s time we stop waiting for divine intervention and start being the divine beings we were meant to be. Because let’s face it: humanity’s report card still has a big fat “Needs Improvement” on it.

But hey, I still have hope. Maybe, just maybe, the Age of Aquarius will bring some wisdom with it. Until then, I’ll be here, reading the cards, holding the line on ethics, and praying humanity learns to clean up its act. One 5 a.m. phone call at a time.
