Neill Dunwoody, Founder and Talent Strategist

Tell us about a pivotal moment in your life that brought you to where you are today.

A significant turning point in my career was during my tenure at UnitedHealth Optum, where I led Sourcing Strategy, Labour Intelligence, and Talent Marketing. This role provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the inefficiencies prevalent in healthcare systems, particularly concerning missed appointments and their cascading effects on both operational costs and patient outcomes. Witnessing these challenges firsthand ignited a passion to develop technological solutions that could streamline processes and enhance patient engagement, leading to the inception of SPRYT.

What drives/inspires you?

I am driven by a profound desire to eliminate inefficiencies that hinder critical sectors like healthcare. The knowledge that technological innovations can transform patient experiences and outcomes fuels my commitment. Additionally, fostering communities and creating platforms that empower individuals, as seen with Tribes and Tech Link Ukraine, inspires me to continue pushing boundaries.

What’s your purpose, mission, and driving force for all the work you do?

My core mission is to harness technology to create seamless, efficient, and human-centric solutions. Whether it’s reducing missed medical appointments through AI-driven engagement or connecting displaced tech professionals with opportunities, the goal is consistent: to use innovation as a catalyst for positive change.

Tell us about your greatest career achievement so far.

One of my most rewarding achievements was leading SPRYT along with my Cofounder Daragh to victory at the HIMSS Europe Startup Pitchfest in Rome. Competing against formidable companies, including those with substantial funding, our success underscored the impact and potential of our solution in addressing real-world healthcare challenges.

What is SPRYT, and how does it help clients?

SPRYT is an AI-powered healthcare assistant designed to simplify medical appointment management for patients while increasing appointment attendance for healthcare systems. Our AI receptionist, Asa, enables patients to book, change, and pay for appointments via instant messaging platforms like WhatsApp, SMS, and RCS, eliminating the need for additional app downloads. Asa interacts like a human receptionist, reducing missed appointments, alleviating administrative burdens, and enhancing patient satisfaction.

What inspired you to create SPRYT?

The inspiration for SPRYT stemmed from two things. I lost a friend to cancer because he found it hard to reschedule appointments, he gave up trying and unfortunately passed away. Secondly observing the substantial operational inefficiencies in patient engagement and appointment management within healthcare systems. Recognizing that missed appointments not only escalate costs but also delay critical care, we envisioned a solution that leverages AI and behavioral science to predict and reduce no-shows, thereby improving both efficiency and patient outcomes.

What sets SPRYT apart from other solutions?

Unlike many appointment management tools that primarily focus on reminders, SPRYT offers a comprehensive AI receptionist capable of booking, rescheduling, answering patient queries, handling payments, and predicting patients at risk of missing appointments. By integrating behavioral science, Asa provides personalized interactions that effectively change patient behavior, leading to a significant reduction in no-show rates.

Could you share some success stories from your clients?

In a recent program, we achieved a 160% increase in patient engagement compared to traditional methods. Patients reported that Asa provided a more convenient and accessible means of managing their appointments, leading to improved attendance rates and overall satisfaction.

If you could change one thing about your industry, what would it be and why?

I would revolutionize patient engagement methodologies within healthcare. The reliance on outdated, manual processes creates unnecessary barriers to care. By adopting AI-driven, patient-centric solutions that operate on platforms patients already use, we can make healthcare more accessible, efficient, and responsive t

o individual needs.

What are some common misconceptions about healthcare technology, and how does SPRYT address them?

A prevalent misconception is that patients, particularly older adults, are reluctant to engage with AI-driven tools. Our experience with SPRYT contradicts this notion. By utilizing familiar communication channels and designing Asa to emulate human interaction, we have observed high engagement levels across diverse demographics.

For readers inspired by this conversation, what first steps would you recommend?

For healthcare providers seeking to enhance patient engagement and reduce no-show rates, I encourage exploring AI-driven solutions like SPRYT that integrate seamlessly into existing workflows. For tech professionals and entrepreneurs, consider joining communities like Tribes to connect with like-minded individuals and access resources that can accelerate your projects. Additionally, supporting initiatives can make a meaningful impact by leveraging your skills for a greater cause. See here.
