My job puts me in positions of great responsibility. From helping and advising very well known, famous people to people in politics and other unique people. There is a common denominator when it comes to achievement, success and following your dreams and its betrayal.

Two young women friends sharing happy time together

I have seen PA’s stab their boss in the back for a slice of the pie, I have seen business partners create a smear campaign and greed overtake them and I’ve seen best friends try and replace their friend, in their own life. Even Julias Caesar was stabbed in the back by his very own council. So how do you surround yourself with incredible people who you can truly trust?

My advice is to wait. Wait until that one special one comes along. I would rather you have no friends than a whole bunch of them. I’d rather you keep your own secrets and plans than tell everyone you know and I would rather you be alone, completely and utterly alone than to be at the hands of a group with ill-intentions.

Those special kind of people have good hearts and it really is true what the songs say, ‘A true heart is hard to find’, but it really is true. Often you can tell in someone’s eyes and most often than not you can see it in their shyness and their own lack of ambition but more likely than not, someone’s true intentions come out in their words.

I had a colleague once who lied, quite frequently, she self-imposed her achievements only to counter-act what she had just said, only then to trip up and then try and take the control and the reigns. This was a behaviour I have seen time and time again, this every changing CV of who someone is and their skillset and experience. They tend to move it slightly, change the goal posts and move some truths around to fit the mission. Look out for dishonesty. It is spoken and spoken frequently and it will be one of the first things they do.

The second thing I have noticed in people who are deceitful is they will poke around for how they can emotionally be there for you. Once you are a target they will try and lean in emotionally. They will be the family you do not have, the best friend you need and the business optics you can’t see. They will undoubtedly try and be a supportive role. This totally blindsides you. So now, you have someone who not only wants what you have and keeps changing their CV to fit the role, but you have become so reliant on them that sooner rather than later you find they hold all the control. You cant function or make a decision on your own life without going through them, or you’ll get punished.

So, moving forwards, you want your tribe right? Not a bunch of over ambitious people who are selfish and disillusioned. Wait. Wait it out. Wait for the kind one, the level headed one, wait for the aware one and the wise one. Wisdom is a sign of great character and they don’t come often. So make wise, kind and nice your familiar. If your gut instinct is a little unsure, regardless of what you have been through, listen to it. It honestly doesn’t matter if you get stabbed in the back, just pick yourself up and keep going, because when you follow a strict protocol of what is acceptable behaviour and what isn’t, then that is when you find your first gem and then you will find your next gem. Believe in yourself enough to know when you feel something and do not let anyone disrupt your dreams and your visions, the manipulation has to go!
