If you haven’t designed your website for both mobile and desktop, you’re potentially missing out on a huge chunk of potential customers. Building a mobile-friendly site doesn’t need to be daunting with these simple tips and tricks. Here is how to build a mobile-friendly website:

Satpal Juttla, Co-founder and Technical Director from evokeu, London’s leading boutique digital marketing and branding agency, shares his insight into creating a website that will perform well on the small screen.

We all spend large chunks of our day looking at our mobile phones. It’s become a normal part of life to Whatsapp a friend, check your emails and use our mobile web browser to find a solution to a problem. Whether you’re trying to find a local takeaway for dinner or you need your car repaired, the majority of us will usually opt for whipping out our phone and completing a quick search. This is why it’s vital that your business website is not only search engine optimised (SEO) to ensure it’s ranking highly in searches, but that it’s also easy to use on mobile.

How To Build A Mobile-Friendly Website

1. Think small

The user experience is completely different on a mobile compared to a desktop; the screen will be considerably smaller and ordinarily portrait instead of landscape. Therefore, a website needs to be designed specially for this situation. You might be using an image on your website that is crystal clear on your desktop, but when viewed on mobile, it’s blurred or hard to define. Likewise, the text needs to be in a font style and size that is painless to read on a small screen. It’s not enough to create a desktop website and hope that it will work on mobile. Every website now needs to be created in two different versions – desktop and mobile. This can be a time-consuming and resource-dependent task, but it’s necessary if you want your business to reach more customers.

2. Make scrolling simple

Users will often use their fingers to navigate a mobile website, which they might be doing whilst on the move or one-handed as they manage another task. Consequently, the search options and menu bar on a mobile need to be clear and concise. Users won’t have the precision of a mouse to click on fiddly buttons and will quickly become frustrated if your website hasn’t been designed with them in mind. Make the process of moving around your site as smooth and simple as possible, which will make it more likely that users will remain on your page and follow through to completing a purchase or becoming a client.

3. Load time needs to be quick

Mobile phones are used for ease. The results we receive should be instant and save us time having to log on to a traditional desktop to trawl the internet the old-fashioned way. We can reach the world using only this little device in our hands. If your site is slow to load because you’ve included images that are too high a resolution or there’s lots of video content, then your visitor will swiftly try another site which might lead to them being introduced to a business that isn’t yours. Patience is not king with mobile users and you need to be quick off the mark to grab their attention. Rigorously test your site to ensure that whatever the signal strength, your site is available to view within seconds.

If you’re not a professional, it can be tough figuring out what’s needed from your website, especially when you need a strong presence on mobile as well as desktop. Your website is the gateway to your business and is one of the main ways you’ll make sales and convert prospective clients into clients that are on your books; hence why it’s worth seeking the support of a team that knows what they’re doing.
