Kirsten Welsch, Founder & Master-Trained Color Analyst

Who is Kirsten Welsch?

Kirsten Welsch is the founder of ATX Color Studio, an award-winning color analysis studio based in Bee Cave, Texas, just outside of Austin. Master-trained by the International Image Institute in the advanced 23-Season Color Analysis system, Kirsten helps women discover the colors that make them look radiant, feel confident, and show up as their most authentic selves. Her journey into color analysis began during years of high-level event design at the Four Seasons in Costa Rica, where she developed a sharp eye for detail, harmony, and the transformative power of color. When she experienced her own color analysis and learned she was a True Spring, everything clicked, and she knew she had to bring that same clarity to other women. Today, ATX Color Studio serves clients both in person and virtually worldwide, with every virtual result independently verified by a master-trained analyst for accuracy. Beyond her studio, Kirsten is also the creator of Business of Color Analysis, a platform where she mentors new and established color analysts on building thriving businesses in the industry. Her work has been recognized with the Award for Best Color Analysis Studio in Austin, Texas.

What inspired you to start ATX Color Studio and specialize in color analysis?

It really started with my own experience. I had spent my career surrounded by color in event design, but I had never turned that lens on myself. When I finally had my personal color analysis done, the results surprised me. I had been wearing colors for years that I thought looked great, but they were actually working against me. The moment I started wearing my True Spring palette, everything changed. I looked healthier. I got more compliments. I stopped second-guessing myself in stores. It was this incredible mix of relief and excitement, and I immediately thought, "Every woman deserves to feel this."

I also noticed that most people had either never heard of color analysis or thought it was limited to the basic four-season system from the 1980s. There was a real gap between what was available and what was possible with a more advanced method. I wanted to bring the 23-Season system to Austin and give women a service that was precise, personalized, and rooted in real methodology. That is the heart of ATX Color Studio.

How would you explain color analysis to someone who has never heard of it before?

Color analysis is the process of identifying which specific shades harmonize best with your natural coloring, meaning your skin tone, eye color, and hair color. Think of it this way. Have you ever put on a certain top and immediately looked more awake, more vibrant, more like yourself? Then worn something else and looked washed out or tired, even though you felt fine? That is color at work.

A professional color analysis takes the guesswork out of that experience. During a session, we evaluate how different colors interact with your complexion by placing fabric drapes near your face and observing what happens. The right colors will make your skin look smoother, your eyes brighter, and your features more defined. The wrong ones will pull out shadows, redness, or dullness. Once we identify your unique palette, you walk away knowing exactly which shades to reach for in clothing, makeup, hair color, and accessories. It is one of those things that, once you see it, you cannot unsee it. According to the International Image Institute, accurate color analysis requires proper training in evaluating undertone, value, and chroma under controlled lighting conditions, which is exactly why professional analysis produces results that online quizzes and AI tools simply cannot match.

What makes your 23-Season Color Analysis method different from other color systems?

Most people are familiar with the classic four-season system that categorizes everyone as a Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter. It was groundbreaking when it was introduced, but it is limited. It puts everyone into one of four categories, which means millions of people with very different natural coloring end up in the same bucket.

The 23-Season system takes that foundation and expands it dramatically. Instead of four broad categories, we work with 23 distinct seasonal palettes. Each one accounts for differences in undertone, depth, and chroma, which is the brightness or softness of your coloring. What this means in practice is a much more precise result. You are not just a "summer." You might be a Soft Summer, a True Summer, a Cool Summer, or a Light Summer, and each of those palettes looks meaningfully different. That level of specificity is what allows me to give clients color recommendations they can actually use in real life, whether they are standing in a store, choosing a lipstick shade, or deciding on a new hair color.

Can you share how discovering the right colors can truly transform someone's confidence and personal style?

When a woman puts on her right colors for the first time, the reaction is almost always the same. She looks in the mirror and just pauses. There is this moment of recognition, like she is seeing herself clearly for the first time in a long time. That is not an exaggeration. I watch it happen over and over in my studio.

When you wear colors that work with your natural coloring instead of against it, you look healthier, more rested, and more vibrant without doing anything else differently. You are not wearing more makeup or spending more money. You are just wearing the right shades, and that has a real ripple effect. You stop dreading getting dressed in the morning because you know everything in your closet works. You stop buying things that look great on the hanger but feel wrong when you put them on. You walk into a room and feel put together instead of uncertain.

One of my clients told me that after her session, she finally felt like she had permission to let go of the colors she thought she should be wearing and lean into the ones that actually made her feel like herself. That shift from confusion to clarity is what drives everything I do.

What is your step-by-step process during a typical color analysis session?

For in-person clients, the experience begins the moment they book. I send preparation instructions so they know to arrive with a clean face, no makeup or tinted moisturizer, no self-tanner on the face or neck, no colored contacts, and a clear photo of themselves from their mid-teens showing their natural hair color. They are also welcome to bring their everyday makeup products for a makeup edit at the end.

When they arrive at my Austin studio, we settle in and I explain the process so they know exactly what to expect. Then we begin draping. I place fabric after fabric near their face under carefully controlled lighting, and we observe how each shade interacts with their skin, eyes, and overall appearance. We are looking at what makes the skin glow versus what creates shadows, what brightens the eyes versus what dulls them. Through this process, I narrow down their exact 23-Season palette.

Once we land on their season, I walk them through their best neutrals, their power colors, the shades to avoid, and their ideal hair color direction. If time allows and they brought products, we do a makeup edit where I evaluate what they are currently using and suggest better-suited options. The whole experience takes about 90 minutes, and it is just the two of us, one on one.

After the session, they leave with a physical color swatch wallet they can take shopping. Within a few days, they also receive curated PDF shopping guides for clothing, makeup, and accessories, plus access to the Colorology app so they can reference their palette from their phone anytime. I also include a complimentary follow-up Zoom call so they can ask questions as they start putting their results into practice.

How do you help virtual clients achieve results that feel as impactful as an in-person session?

Virtual color analysis is not a shortcut, and it is not a watered-down version of the in-person experience. It is a comprehensive, carefully structured process designed to deliver the same level of accuracy.

After a client books, they receive detailed instructions on how to submit their photos. Photo quality matters a great deal, so I walk them through exactly how to capture images in natural light with a clean face. I also offer an optional onboarding call where I guide them through the photo process in real time.

Once their photos are submitted, I complete a thorough analysis using the 23-Season method. What sets my virtual process apart is that every single result is independently reviewed and confirmed by a master-trained color analyst before I share it with the client. That third-party verification step adds a layer of accuracy that most virtual services simply do not offer.

Then we meet for a private Zoom reveal session, typically 30 to 45 minutes. I walk them through their full palette, explain why their colors work, share makeup and hair color recommendations, and answer their questions live. Afterward, they receive all the same digital resources as in-person clients, including PDF guides, app access, and the option to purchase a physical swatch wallet shipped to their door. I also include a complimentary 30-minute follow-up call that they can book anytime within six months. If something does not feel right as they start applying their palette, I am happy to take another look.

What are the most common mistakes people make when choosing their own colors?

The biggest mistake is assuming that colors you are drawn to are automatically your best colors. We all have shades we love, but loving a color and looking great in it are two different things. I cannot tell you how many clients walk in certain they are an Autumn because they love earthy tones, only to discover they are actually a Summer, and those warm, heavy shades were making them look tired.

Another common mistake is defaulting to safe neutrals like black, gray, and navy without understanding whether those specific neutrals actually work for your coloring. Black is not universally flattering. For some seasons, it is too harsh and creates contrast that pulls attention away from the face. There are better neutral options for almost everyone, but most people do not know they exist until they have been properly analyzed.

People also tend to follow trends without filtering them through their own palette. A color might be everywhere one season, but that does not mean it belongs in your wardrobe. The most stylish women I know are not necessarily following trends. They are wearing their colors with intention, and that is what makes them look effortlessly put together.

Can you share a client success story that best illustrates the life-changing impact of your work?

One client who stands out is a woman who came to me after going gray. She told me she had completely lost her color confidence. She no longer knew what worked, she felt invisible in everything she wore, and she had stopped enjoying getting dressed altogether. She booked a virtual session because she does not live near Austin, and she was honestly not sure it would make a difference.

During her reveal call, we walked through her full palette together, and I could hear the shift in her voice as we talked through the results. She kept saying things like, "Oh, that makes so much sense." By the end, she had a completely different relationship with her coloring. She understood that going gray did not mean her options had narrowed. It meant they had shifted, and now she had a clear roadmap for where to go.

After the session, she reached out to tell me that the experience gave her the tools to make informed decisions about clothing, makeup, and even jewelry for the first time in years. She said she wished she had done it sooner. That is the kind of transformation I see again and again, and it never gets old.

What are the top three benefits someone experiences after a color analysis with you?

The first benefit is clarity. You stop guessing. You know exactly which shades of clothing, makeup, hair color, and accessories are going to work for you. That alone eliminates so much daily stress and decision fatigue. Instead of standing in your closet wondering what goes together, you have a framework that makes every decision easier.

The second benefit is confidence. When you look in the mirror and everything looks cohesive and intentional, you carry yourself differently. Clients tell me all the time that they feel more like themselves after their session. That confidence shows up in how they interact with the world, how they present themselves at work, and even how they feel on an ordinary Tuesday morning.

The third benefit is smarter spending. Most women have closets full of things that do not quite work, and they keep buying more, hoping the next piece will be the one. Once you know your palette, you stop making those costly mistakes. Everything you buy goes with everything else. Your wardrobe gets smaller but more functional, and you actually wear what you own.

How can your color analysis help someone make smarter style, shopping, and makeup decisions?

Color analysis changes everything because it gives you a filter. Right now, when most women walk into a store or scroll online, they are choosing based on what catches their eye or what a model looks good in. After a color analysis, you have a clear framework. You know your best shades of white, your most flattering denim wash, which metals work for your jewelry, and what lipstick tones bring out your features.

For makeup specifically, this is huge. So many women are wearing foundation, blush, and lip colors that are technically the right shade on paper but completely wrong for their undertone. I evaluate clients' existing products and recommend alternatives that actually complement their natural coloring.

When it comes to shopping, clients tell me they spend less but feel better about what they buy. One client said her color analysis already changed how she shops within the first few weeks. She finally understood how to incorporate both neutrals and bolder shades in a way that felt right. That kind of clarity is hard to put a price on, but it saves real money over time.

What would you say to someone who is curious but hesitant to book their first session?

I completely understand the hesitation. It can feel like a big step, especially if you are not sure what to expect or you are worried you will not like your results. But here is what I would say. The women who come in most nervous are almost always the ones who leave the most excited. Because color analysis is not about being told what you cannot wear. It is about discovering what makes you look and feel incredible, often in shades you never would have picked up on your own.

If you are the type of person who has tried on five outfits before leaving the house, who has a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear, or who has ever thought, "I just want to feel like myself again," this is exactly what color analysis is designed to solve.

If you are not local to Austin, that is perfectly fine. My virtual sessions deliver the same accuracy and depth, and they include a live Zoom call where we walk through everything together. You do not have to figure it out alone.
