We are blessed to have a truly remarkable body, working on our behalf night and day. As we age hormonal efficiency can be reduced and wreak havoc on the system. Having healthy levels in the blood is essential. Hormones are only active when they become free from protein transporters and bind to the appropriate receptor cites. Diet, exercise and proper supplementation are invaluable.

The main protein transporter for testosterone and estrogen is Sex hormone ‒ binding globulin and its management is paramount. If hormones are bound to Sex hormone ‒ binding globulin they are rendered void and do not have any positive effect in the body. Hence if SHGB is too high, you may suffer adverse effects of estrogen or testosterone deficiency causing a vast array of health-related issues.

SHGB levels are determined by weight, thyroid, testosterone, estrogen, and insulin. The key is nutrition and exercise in order to normalize SHGB and maintain a healthy weight via balanced nutrition. Essentially we want hormones to have maximum effect on cells and promote healthy hormones, most of the cells have to be free from their SHGB carrier and bind to receptor cites in cell membrane.

It is important to note that receptor cites are settled in Omega 3 fatty acids. The need for proper nutrition as we age is further validated by the fact that it is Omega 3 fatty acids that are most important for cell binding.

Other helpful nutrients are flaxseed oil, Olive oil, Chia seeds, walnuts. Sardines and most importantly, fish with high oil content. How can we further facilitate the hormonal system in its ability to produce youthful hormones for our benefit as we age.

  1. Balanced nutrition consisting of oily fish 3 to 5 times a week and plenty of greens and fibers.

  2. Exercise

  3. Sleep

  4. Proper hydration

  5. Reduce sugars

  6. Avoid excessive alcohol

  7. manage stress

  8. maintain a healthy weight 9 ‒ Gut maintenance

  9. meditation

By employing such strategies into our lifestyle we will be well on our way to living our best life and living it abundantly.
