From Hostage To Coach – Unleashing Unbreakable Resilience In Business And Life

I am please to write my first article as an executive contributor to Brainz Magazine, sharing my profound experiences working globally and overcoming extreme challenges, including being an international hostage for five years and a captivating journey through a 35-year career in the Venezuelan and US oil and gas industry, and working with several multicultural partnerships and JV's.

Miraculously freed after a prisoner swap, I discovered the extraordinary resilience within myself, guided by a mysterious path and the hand of our mighty lord.

 

Today, drawing on the lessons learned, I have transitioned into a leadership and resilience coach, committed to helping others navigate their adversities in both business and life. With a wealth of experience in building teams, creating challenging workplaces, and initiating businesses from scratch, I guide business leaders and CEOs to tap into their unbreakable spirit.

 

Surviving the unimaginable has empowered me to serve others, sharing tools to unlock the inner force within every individual. My mission is to train minds, enhance leadership skills, and transform ordinary individuals into extraordinary leaders and better human beings.

 

The fusion of survivor resilience from a hostage ordeal and a lengthy career in leadership forms a powerful toolkit, uniquely positioned to guide others on the path to becoming exceptional leaders.

 

The synergy of these experiences offers invaluable insights into the human psyche, crisis management, and the dynamics of leadership.

 

1. Understanding the human psyche


Surviving a hostage situation involves navigating extreme stress, uncertainty, and fear.


This experience hones a deep understanding of the human psyche, recognizing the intricacies of emotions, coping mechanisms, and the importance of mental fortitude and building strong bond with other survivors


This understanding is a cornerstone in effective leadership, allowing for empathy, emotional intelligence, and the ability to connect with team members on a profound level.

 

2. Crisis management expertise


Having weathered a hostage situation, one gains unparalleled expertise in crisis management.

This skill is transferable to leadership roles where navigating unexpected challenges is a constant.

I show and teach the Leaders how having experienced this extreme situations I developed the ability to stay calm under pressure, make swift decisions, and guide teams through tumultuous times.

 

3. Building resilient teams


Surviving a hostage situation demands teamwork and collaboration. Translating this experience into leadership, one learns the art of building resilient teams.


I show Leaders that having faced this adversity firsthand, I understand and I can teach them the importance of fostering a culture that encourages support, trust, and unity among team members. This cohesive environment is the foundation for overcoming challenges and achieving collective success.

 

4. Adaptability and flexibility


The journey from hostage to leadership underscores the importance of adaptability.


I show Leaders how having faced this extreme circumstances I developed and can share and teach them how to develop their innate ability to pivot, adapt strategies, and remain flexible in the face of uncertainty. This adaptability is a crucial trait for navigating the ever-evolving landscape of business and leadership.

 

5. Inspiring through resilience


Combining survivor resilience with a seasoned leadership career allows us to inspire others through real, tangible examples.

 

I can motivate and speak to the Leaders and their teams s and inspire them as a coach and mentor who has walked the talk, motivating them to persevere in the face of challenges.

Jose Angel Pereira is one of the members of the CITGO6, a group of Americans wrongfully detained and held captive in Venezuela. He was held for 1,775 days, from November 21, 2017, to October 1, 2022. His only crime is that he is an American. Before the Venezuelan regime took Mr. Pereira, hostage, he spent 35 Years of Experience as an Oil Company Executive. He was formerly Citgo Petroleum's CEO (a US-based Refineries Complex and Broad Gas Station Distribution Center across the United States). 


Since returning on October 1, 2022, after being illegally and wrongfully detained for nearly five years, he has focused on reconnecting with his family while writing his memoir. He advocates for other Americans wrongfully detained as hostages abroad and uses his voice to help change US policy on dealing with hostages and those wrongfully detained. Mr. Pereira will continue to leverage his international experiences as a point of reference to empower others in making positive changes in the world.
