Excellence Becoming – A Gold Standards Original Asks What Happens on the Way to Becoming Excellent

New York, September 14, 2026 What actually happens to a person on the way to becoming excellent? That question is at the center of Excellence Becoming A Gold Standards Original, a new podcast hosted by K. Joia Houheneka and launching today. Available exclusively on Apple Podcasts throughout September, the show explores excellence not as a polished achievement or fixed destination, but as a lifelong process of becoming through challenge, reflection, responsibility, and change.

Rather than focusing primarily on conventional success stories, Excellence Becoming looks beneath achievement to examine the experiences that form the person capable of it: failures, difficult decisions, unexpected setbacks, abandoned plans, periods of uncertainty, and moments when an old way of working or an old version of oneself can no longer meet the demands of what comes next.

“Too often, we tell stories of excellence backward,” said Houheneka. “Once we know someone succeeded, every mistake can look like just a clever step along an inevitable path. But that isn’t what becoming feels like while you’re living it. I wanted to create conversations about the messy middle–when you don’t yet know how the story ends, and the challenge itself is asking you to become capable of something you weren’t capable of before.”

A launch collection about catalytic adversity

Excellence Becoming debuts with a special opening collection of 15 short conversations with entrepreneurs, authors, and other leaders, each centered on one deceptively simple question:

"What is a failure, mistake, challenge, or struggle that, however difficult in the moment, ultimately made you capable of greater excellence?"

The resulting conversations explore what Houheneka describes as catalytic adversity: adverse conditions that become catalysts for meaningful change.

The concept does not assume that suffering or failure automatically produces growth. Instead, it asks what can happen when people engage seriously with difficulty by reflecting on what reality has revealed, reconsidering old assumptions, developing new capacities, and/or choosing differently as a result.

Across the launch collection, guests share stories of professional reinvention, burnout, entrepreneurial setbacks, identity shifts, changing relationships with fear, and moments when qualities that once contributed to success had to evolve for another chapter to become possible. Together, the conversations present a more human picture of excellence: not perfection, but formation.

The work forms the person

The deeper proposition behind Excellence Becoming is that the pursuit of worthwhile work changes not only what a person produces, but the person doing the producing.

A sufficiently worthy challenge eventually exceeds existing capacities. It might demand greater judgment, courage, patience, responsibility, self-knowledge, or imagination. In attempting to rise to those demands, people have the opportunity to become more capable. Significantly, those greater capacities, in turn, can make greater contribution possible. Ideally, what starts to form is a virtuous spiral.

“The work forms the worker,” Houheneka said. “When we commit ourselves to doing difficult things that make some portion of the world better, we have the opportunity to make ourselves better in the process. Then, because we have become more capable, we can contribute at a higher level. Then go on to become more ourselves.”

That philosophy will continue beyond the introductory collection. Excellence Becoming will feature long-form conversations with accomplished entrepreneurs and creators examining how excellence has been formed across the course of their lives, and not merely what they have achieved, but the experiences and transformations that made those achievements possible.

Houheneka will also release a short Monday Morning Question each week: an activating reflection built around a question she is considering in her own pursuit of excellence, inviting listeners to carry the inquiry into their own work and lives.

An Apple Podcasts exclusive for September

For its inaugural month, Excellence Becoming will be available exclusively on Apple Podcasts. The September exclusivity is an intentional part of the launch strategy, giving listeners one destination at which to discover the complete opening collection, follow the show, and return for new episodes.

The full launch collection is available beginning today, September 14.
