Dr. Philip Sykes, Founder and CEO of The British School of Excellence

Who is Philip Sykes inside and outside the business world?

Inside the business world, I am a man on a mission, driven to help people unlock their fullest potential and discover the confidence they may not even know they possess. I thrive on equipping individuals with practical tools, timeless principles, and the mindset to excel both professionally and personally. For me, this isn’t just work, it’s a calling. Every programme, every coaching session, every keynote is an opportunity to ignite transformation.

Outside of business, I wear the hats that mean the most, husband, father, friend. I treasure the grounding joy of family dinners, long conversations, laughter with friends, and the simple beauty of being present with loved ones. I believe in living with intention, cherishing life’s simple pleasures, and making sure every interaction leaves someone feeling seen, valued, and uplifted.

“Every programme, every coaching session, every keynote is an opportunity to ignite transformation.”

What inspired you to create The British School of Excellence, and how has that vision evolved over time?

The school was founded on a deep conviction that courtesy, respect, and social intelligence are not relics of the past, but the very building blocks of a better future. During my career in fine hospitality, I saw firsthand the magic that happens when people feel respected, cared for, and truly connected. Those moments of grace linger long after the experience itself.

What began as a vision to revive these values in modern contexts has grown into a global movement. Today, The British School of Excellence is a platform for transformation across cultures and continents. Our mission has evolved into something much bigger than teaching etiquette, it’s about building confidence, shaping leaders, and inspiring individuals to live and work with dignity, authenticity, and heart.

“What began as a vision has grown into a global movement.”

How would you describe the impact of etiquette and presence in today’s fast-paced global world?

In our hyperconnected age, etiquette and presence are not luxuries, they are lifelines. In a world where impressions are formed in seconds and opportunities are fleeting, how we show up matters more than ever. Presence gives you the power to command attention in a crowded room, etiquette ensures that the respect you’ve earned endures long after. Together, they’re the quiet, invisible forces that determine the quality of your relationships, your opportunities, and ultimately your legacy.

What makes The British School of Excellence different from any other training institution in this space?

We are not in the business of teaching rules, we are in the business of changing lives. Our approach is experiential, deeply human, and transformational. Every programme is designed to unlock confidence and authenticity because true excellence isn’t about mimicking behaviours, it’s about aligning who you are with how you show up in the world. That’s why our clients don’t just leave with knowledge, they leave with a new sense of self, a fresh clarity of purpose, and tools that sustain them for life.

“We don’t just teach etiquette, we inspire transformation.”

How do you help clients transform their personal brand and leadership presence?

Transformation begins with awareness, a pivotal moment where people start to see how the world perceives them, often for the first time. From there, we guide them through the subtle yet powerful dimensions of body language, voice, appearance, and mindset. It’s about harmonising inner confidence with outward presence so their brand feels natural, magnetic, and unforgettable. The joy is watching someone go from tentative and uncertain to walking into a room with a presence that commands attention while remaining deeply authentic.

What are the key qualities that define accurate social intelligence and influence?

At its heart, social intelligence is empathy in action, the ability to connect, adapt, and make others feel understood. Curiosity fuels it, respect grounds it, and adaptability allows it to transcend cultures and contexts. Influence flows naturally when people trust you, when they know you are listening, and when you lead by example. The most powerful leaders I’ve met influence not by force, but by inspiring others to rise with them.

How does your background in fine hospitality shape the way you teach communication and connection?

Hospitality taught me the priceless art of anticipation, noticing the unspoken needs, and making someone feel special before they even ask. It instilled in me that excellence is never accidental, it is intentional, thoughtful, and personal. That ethos guides all my teaching. Communication isn’t about transmitting words, it’s about elevating the other person. Connection isn’t about being heard, it’s about making the other person feel significant. That’s where the magic of human interaction lies.

You’ve worked with royalty, CEOs, and public figures. What do they all have in common when it comes to personal excellence?

What unites them is a shared realisation. Excellence is never a finish line, it’s a daily practice. The most extraordinary people I’ve worked with, whether royals, executives, or public servants, are those who remain curious, humble, and relentlessly committed to refinement. They understand that influence comes not from status, but from consistently showing up with grace, respect, and purpose.

“Excellence is never a finish line, it’s a daily practice.”

What role does cultural intelligence play in your global training programmes?

Cultural intelligence is not optional, it’s essential. We live in a world of extraordinary diversity, but also one where a simple misstep in cultural awareness can permanently close doors. At The British School of Excellence, we teach people not just to respect differences, but to embrace them, celebrate them, and adapt to them while staying true to themselves. That balance is the hallmark of someone who can thrive on any stage, anywhere in the world.

What has been your proudest moment as Founder and CEO of The British School of Excellence?

There have been many milestones, but the moments that stay with me are the transformations I witness. When a client who arrived uncertain, perhaps even doubting themselves, leaves standing taller, speaking with clarity, and carrying an inner light of confidence, that is my proudest achievement every single time. It’s not about accolades or recognition, it’s about seeing people step into their power and knowing that they’ll ripple that confidence into the world around them.

How does your recent honorary Doctorate reflect the deeper mission behind your work?

Receiving an honorary Doctorate was an honour beyond words, a humbling moment that validated not just my work, but the message behind it. To me, it symbolises that what we do teaching kindness, respect, presence, and connection is not soft or secondary, but central to building better businesses, better leaders, and better societies. It was a recognition that these values matter deeply in our world today and must remain at the core of progress.

What advice would you give to someone ready to refine their presence and elevate their life?

Start with self-awareness. Take an honest look at how you present yourself and how others perceive you. Then commit to the minor, daily refinements, a kinder word, a more open stance, a deeper level of listening. Excellence is not about chasing perfection, it is about living each day as the best version of yourself and then striving again tomorrow. When you approach life with that mindset, you don’t just elevate your presence, you elevate your world.

“Excellence is not about perfection, it is about striving to be your best, day after day.”
