Are you aware of the fact that pop culture planted seeds of envy, jealousy, and unhealthy competition in your mind? It didn’t only make you fall into the trap of comparing artists as if there was only space for one in the spotlight. It also had you judge yourself in comparison with people around you, which is a trap that keeps you far away from abundance. It’s time to reveal the truth. Pop Culture has hidden abundance from you, and as a result, it has shaped your beliefs about what’s possible for you. Learn how to identify the scarcity seeds from Pop Culture and turn it into a healthier way of viewing yourself and the world.

What is abundance?

Let’s begin with defining the word abundance, just to make sure that we are speaking about the same thing. According to the Cambridge dictionary, abundance is the situation in which there is more than enough of something, ex, There was an abundance of food at the wedding. This team has talent in abundance. Her generosity is abundant, the children's energy is abundant, or the area has an abundance of lakes, rivers, and streams to fish in. Or, relevant for today’s conversation, “There is an abundance of artists to dance to, sing with, be inspired by, and you can be an artist as well. There is space for everyone.”

The opposite would be scarcity

A situation in which something is not easy to find or get. For example, the scarcity of skilled workers in a certain industry, almost extinct flowers, or watermelons in Sweden during the winter. Or questions like, “Who do you like of these similar female pop stars? You have to choose a favorite!”

Note, the word abundance doesn’t have to be associated with over consumption, expensive bags, private jets, and materialism as my Instagram's algorithm would suggest with the word “abundance”, due to a genre of “Abundance Coaches” I follow. I’ve learned a lot from their mindset, but I don’t want to feed into the image that expensive lifestyles are necessary in order to live in abundance. Abundance simply means overflow, openness, more than enough, and the most healing approach is to apply it towards your ability to actually appreciate yourself and the people around you.

Abundance mindset

When it comes to linking the word abundance with mindset, it’s all about seeing and appreciating opportunities, creating value wherever you go and honor the wisdom in yourself and others. It’s about recognizing your and others' assets, talents, and skills, rather than dwelling on not being enough or judging others for doing things you wouldn’t.

But how did Pop Culture hide Abundance from you? There are more examples than I’m aware of, but I’ll bring you with me to my first personal memory regarding this question.

Are you team Britney Spears or team Christina Aguilera?

I remember being 10 years old, having such a hard time choosing between the two stars, since I really liked both of them. The hidden message was that there was only space for one woman on top, and without knowing it. I believed them. So when I went on the internet to pursue my dreams of making a positive contribution in the world, in my early 20s, I felt defeated before I even tried. Because whatever I decided to do, I would find someone else already doing it. Having this automated response, “There is only room for one” or “If we like her, we can’t like the other one,” is a scarcity mindset in action, which makes so many women hold back their unique expressions, dreams, and actions. Being too much or too similar to another woman is not meant to be competition. Someone else succeeding does not mean that you are failing. Yet, if that’s how you feel, the scarcity mindset is running through your veins and only you can choose to transform into a more abundant person, responding positively when people are succeeding.

You don’t have to travel back in time to see this rivalry being portrayed in the media; the same conversations are being made about Beyonce and Rihanna, Cardi B and Nicki Minaj. Speaking of people of color, how many movies have we seen with space for one (funny) black person in the cast? Making the audience subconsciously believe that there is only space for one marginalized person at the table. All this type of messaging has been given to us repeatedly, internalised by too many who continue to share the scarcity attitudes, and it’s not doing anyone any good.

Are you willing to see things differently?

The first step towards increased abundance is awareness about moments of scarcity, and the second step is to be willing to change. Scarcity makes you feel inadequate, it blocks your creativity and it lowers your life force. You can’t manifest your dreams when you don’t think that there is space for you. In addition, a scarcity mindset can create envy and grudges in close relationships, which makes life even more miserable. You have to be willing to see possibilities that Pop Culture didn’t show you in order to enhance your quality of life. Obviously, there are more places in your life that feed you scarcity lies, but unpacking specific lies from your life, such as this one, is a helpful way to create specific awareness and energetic release.

Abundance mindset

An abundant mindset is not comparing, judging or making people smaller or less worthy. In abundance, from your point of view, you get to appreciate many artists, all artists, you never have to pick a side or even compare them. These positive effects of cultivating an abundant mindset are greater than learning to appreciate similar artists in the same genre. You will notice, as you learn how to appreciate others, that you will appreciate yourself more in return. Dropping the emotional weight of judgement and comparison will awaken your creativity, spark collaborations, and help you discover new ways of doing things. Your addiction to drama will fade and adding a cherry on top, you will, by default, be happier in general. You will feel more and more enough, and contribute to the world by being you.

Life is a reflection of your internal world. If you suffer from jealousy, envy or fear of taking up space, it’s not your fault. You can blame Pop Culture for a little moment, or understand the seeds that you were given. And then, take ownership over your path and start to cultivate a new way of interacting with others, regardless if they know about it or not. All is felt in the collective conscious field. Become the change, from scarcity to abundance. You will feel better and the ripple effects of your choices will naturally be expanding in abundance.
