World travel is a unique experience. I recommend it. Travel can be an investment in oneself. Some seek knowledge in books or school, but travel is a great teacher and a good way to keep an open mind.

Having traveled for about two decades now, both with people and solo, I can confidently say that it has helped me grow at a fast pace and brought more value to my life.

It takes confidence to leave your backyard, so to speak, for the first time. Leaving your city, province, state, or country can be a lot for most.

I remember, at the start, I was very interested in making that leap and starting my first trip. The first time I experienced traveling alone, I was only 7 years old. I was coming from Guyana to Canada. My mother wanted to try moving to Guyana with me. I came back alone, which was my first time traveling solo. That sense of independence is something I will remember forever. Being a brave young man, it was something I wanted to do.

As an adult, traveling the continent as an athlete with a purpose was a great experience. Meeting other fellow travelers and locals gave me numerous advantages and opportunities for personal growth, self-discovery, and mental health.

Now, having lived in and visited numerous countries, I’ve met great people and expanded my reach as a model, entrepreneur, and human being.

10 advantages of solo travel

1. Independence

Solo travel allows you to make all the decisions and plan your itinerary according to your preferences, providing a sense of freedom and independence.

2. Self-discovery

Traveling alone provides an opportunity for self-reflection and introspection. You can learn more about yourself, your strengths and limitations, while gaining a deeper understanding of your own desires and aspirations.

3. Flexibility

When traveling alone, you have the flexibility to change plans spontaneously, explore off-the-beaten-path destinations, and adapt to unforeseen circumstances without needing to accommodate others’ preferences.

4. Empowerment

Solo travel can boost your confidence and self-awareness. Navigating new places and overcoming challenges on your own can make you feel empowered and capable of handling various situations.

5. Personal growth

Being alone will teach you a lot about yourself. You have no choice but to grow and adjust to what is happening around you. You face different cultures, customs, and perspectives, broadening your horizons and expanding your knowledge.

6. Increased social interactions

Traveling alone often encourages interactions with locals and fellow travelers. It can be easier to meet new people, make friends from diverse backgrounds, and engage in meaningful conversations when you're on your own. You may also learn new ways to express yourself and pick up some basic words in other languages.

7. Self-reliance

Solo travel teaches you to rely on yourself, make decisions independently, and solve problems on your own. This can enhance your problem-solving skills and resourcefulness, revealing strengths and weaknesses you may not have known you had.

8. Authentic experiences

Traveling solo allows you to immerse yourself fully in the local culture and experience a destination from a more authentic perspective. You can engage with locals, try local cuisine, and participate in unique activities without compromising your preferences. You may discover interesting things you would never have experienced anywhere else.

9. Personal reflection and relaxation

Solo travel offers an opportunity for solitude and personal reflection. You can take the time to relax, unwind, and rejuvenate while enjoying your own company and disconnecting from daily routines, gaining a new sense of gratitude and understanding.

10. Empathy and open-mindedness

Solo travel often fosters empathy and open-mindedness. Experiencing different cultures firsthand and interacting with people from diverse backgrounds can cultivate a greater understanding and appreciation for global diversity.

These advantages of solo travel can contribute to personal growth, self-confidence, and a deeper appreciation for the world around you. However, it's important to prioritize safety, be aware of regulations and customs, and take the necessary precautions while traveling alone.

Challenges of a solo traveller

Being alone, you would probably feel more vulnerable. Things may trigger you that you’ve never had to deal with before. Culture shock may be a factor; you may feel lonely, out of place, or lost. Taking time to adjust is normal. When you were a kid, it probably took you some time to adjust to a new school. There is no real playbook for being a solo traveler. Having an open mind and being willing to learn is a good start. Having a good friend to call may also help.

Being alone in the place you are staying is not a bad thing. Play some music, get grounded, whatever that looks like for you. The fact that you are stepping out into the world alone is something you should congratulate yourself for. It takes courage to do that, and you did it.
