Tens of thousands of applicants have competed for $100,000 each to be able to bring wacky designs for an Airbnb venture to life.

The competition drew entries from all over the world. The judges revealed that 400 of them offered spectacular stargazing experiences; 777 designs were inspired by fruit whilst 1,214 ideas involved treehouses and 389 featured suspended structures. There were even 509 mushroom-inspired designs. The judges – who included Airbnb super hosts and architects - have now picked 100 finalists who will be able to use the money to create their wonders. The concepts include a tyre-shaped house made from tyres; accommodation that looks like a giant fossilized snail, a floating avocado and a lighthouse in Sweden accessible only by boat.

“The winning ideas stood out for their unique and inspiring design, sustainable consideration, and novel ways of offering immersive guest experiences”, said Airbnb in a press release, which also featured some tantalising images of the designs. All of these weird but wonderful structures will be available to stay in next Summer.
