There is an old saying that we can identify a thing by its nature or its characteristics. In a spiritual context, this is the ideal way to observe the consciousness of an individual, despite our perception and those of others. In this article, we will look at seven indicators of how we can detect higher consciousness in ourselves and others.

What is higher consciousness?

Higher consciousness is an elevated state of awareness that produces compassion, empathy, understanding, and acceptance of all in the name of the truth, the highest good of all. This consciousness is universal. It can stand on its own due to a willingness to learn something new and expand. This is why it doesn’t belong to one set religion or spiritual practice, yet brings great clarity to all, including our diverse cultures, theologies, and theosophies across the planet. Let’s look at seven universal indicators that can point to an individual who operates in some form of higher consciousness.

Profound self-awareness

People who hold higher consciousness possess a deep awareness of self on a mental, emotional, physical, or spiritual level. Many take a path of self-discovery. The gift they bring to the world is that they do not seek to be superior or inferior to anyone. They honor all because they accept that all have the right to exist due to their expanding human consciousness. As a result, they have a deep connection to themselves and those around them.

Shadow integration

Shadow integration is the practice of processing the things we hide from ourselves and others in order to conform in our societies. It is the work of letting go of our socially modified masks so that we can heal by accepting our authentic state of being. All of the things that we reject, deny, repress, or suppress are reconciled as part of the self and no longer projected inwardly or outwardly, creating conflict and suffering. This process can be initiated by some form of catalyst (of integrity) that ushers in repentance, followed by a deeper compassion and understanding of ourselves.

Other characteristics that develop within a person who has integrated their shadow are:

  • Inner peace

  • Detachment

  • Deep spiritual connections and insights

  • Discernment

  • Emotional intelligence

  • Divine intelligence

Meekness

These are the people who are cheerful givers and see the best in others. They also have very gentle natures that can be taken for granted if they are surrounded by people who do not see their value or if they have issues with codependency. They are masters of restraint. In fact, they could be mistreated but will refrain from retaliating, even when they have the right to do so. They allow life to take care of any situation where they are slighted by another. They can appear quiet in social settings or choose not to waste their words. They do not wish to dominate conversations. They usually go with the flow. This makes them great listeners and observers.

Ethical

People who are ethical have one priority, to do what is right for the highest good of all. They refuse to betray their integrity or reduce the dignity of others. They are humanitarians who give honest feedback, respect, and direction without compromise. You can usually spot them in socially conscious events that give back to their communities. They may be rebels leading a movement or whistleblowers in establishments with unethical practices. They have a strong sense of accountability that is fair and works toward the best possible outcome for all on both an individual and collective level.

Kind

This one can be a bit complex for those of us who see being ‘nice’ and kind as the same thing. They are not. Nice is a superficial mask that we wear in social settings to acknowledge others, usually strangers to us. Sometimes we are ‘nice’ to others when we have a hidden agenda at play. Nice people are filled with self-interest. That is why it is a mask. Hiding who you really are usually speaks of self-serving motives.

Kindness, however, is a state of being. It is a genuine awareness of the self and other people’s needs. People who practice kindness have the intention of alleviating the suffering of others in healthy and healing ways. We see this consciousness in our good Samaritans. They always appear when we need them the most.

Inner peace

These people have mastered detachment and activated their gifts of discernment. Mindfulness is one of the catalysts for them. They are examples of the truth that there is no peace without creating it. This type of peace is generated from within us. As a result, these people appear to us as having no worries.

People with inner peace love peaceful settings. It is their priority. They can love nature, bodies of water, and living off the grid. They do not keep up with current events and are completely detached from the rat race of the world. It is almost as if they live outside of time.

A big sign of someone with inner peace is that they are usually in a positive state of mind, body, and spirit. They give great advice and usually uplift others. They are masters of smiling and give the best hugs. They can be on any path (spiritual, religious, etc.), but are usually deeply devoted to whatever they choose.

Fearless

We at SoulFlwr would consider those in our society who live their own truth with this consciousness. They are devoted to being who they are authentically and seek to add value wherever they go. These are our generational curse breakers.

They decree their own relationship with life and with Spirit, regardless of whether they get approval from their environment or not. They are our creative geniuses who think outside of the box. They resist accepting things simply because they have been widely believed or done in a certain way. Vulnerability is one of the main catalysts for those who are fearless. They use vulnerability in their authenticity in powerful ways that help others be authentic too. In essence, these are the people we see doing the unorthodox things that change our world for the better.

True spiritual growth

True spiritual growth (or any growth for that matter) has requirements that can be subtle to the unaware eye. In a world where we value dominance, aggression, competitiveness, and retaliation, we have misconceptions. It is our inferred belief system that these characteristics are superior and can keep us from harm. They do not. They keep us in submission to be manipulated and controlled by those who benefit from our lack of awareness. Higher consciousness is achieved when we make the choice to embrace an awareness that does not create suffering for ourselves or others, even when we disagree. No one needs a bully to protect them. Only the truth can fully protect us and set us free.

Therefore, it is wise to realize that lower vibrations will only create opportunities for more fear and suffering, not the healing light that we all seek in higher consciousness.
