You’ve heard about it, you’ve thought about it, but have you done it? I am talking about Meal Prep, the simplest and most efficient way to make sure you are eating healthy. Here are 5 steps to get you going.

1. Meal Plan

You can’t prep without a plan. Write out what you are making for the week or even the next few days. Print out the recipes or save them in a folder. Think about picking a theme for the week like “Mexican food” so you can share ingredients and also minimize food waste. Pick a “meal planning” day and schedule 30 minutes a week to figure it out.

2. Storage

Organize or buy some good glass containers. You are making food ahead and you need somewhere to put it. I like Pyrex glass rectangle containers with snap lids. They stack well in the fridge and go right into the oven or microwave. Order them on Amazon and you may have them tomorrow.

3. Pick a Shopping Day

If you meal plan Friday, then maybe your shopping day is Saturday and your prepping day is Sunday. Be efficient, make a good list and get in and get out. Or use a delivery service. Normally there is just a small fee and well worth your time.

4. Planning the Prep

Make a list of what you will prep. Make one or two complete meals so they are ready to go. Think soups, chilis, stews, or lettuce-less salads (lentil, mock tuna, bean). Then prep other bulk ingredients so they are ready to easily throw together to complete a meal. Think grains and roasted veggies for buddha bowls, sauces for pasta, lentil taco filling, falafel, and hummus for pita sandwiches. Schedule your meal prep day.

5. Label it

Stay organized and label the container. What is it, what it goes with, and what day you plan to eat it. You will have lots of containers in your fridge. Believe me, labeling will help.
