For decades the health and wellness industry has morphed and grown based on whims and fads, particularly around the latest trends with diets and exercise routines.

Trillions of dollars are spent every year by people desperate to find the one thing that can catapult them back to good health. And sometimes, some things work for a short period of time. Rarely, however, do we find things that sustain our health over long periods of time.

Why?

Because they’re based on someone else telling you what you need to be OK, and they’re created using outdated thinking – even when they’re presented as ‘cutting edge’ – that doesn’t match the way we live anymore.

So, what do you need instead?

Understand who you are, and what it is you need.

Since the inception of laptops and smart phones that have allowed us to be mobile with our work, the way we live has changed.

Sure, they revolutionised our ability to get things done… but they’ve also played a significant role in the downward turn of our health and wellbeing.

Instead of having clear delineation between work and home, we’ve found ourselves in contact and reachable 24/7. But unfortunately, the way we look after ourselves within this environment hasn’t changed.

With the advent of social media, the pressure in our lives has been raised significantly, because everything we do has suddenly become so much more visible.

This visibility has brought with it the feeling that we need to be constantly proving ourselves – where we are, where we’re going, what we’re doing, who we’re doing it with, what we’re achieving, what we’ve been recognised for… and the list goes on. And all so we can constantly prove that we’re successful.

But what’s the cost of this constant proof of our ‘worth’?

Like everything in life, there’s a consequence and a cost to the decisions we make.

The harder we work to prove our success, the greater the strain on our health and wellbeing. We know that we’re pushing ourselves too hard, and we know that our health is suffering along the way, but we tell ourselves we’ll deal with it later … when we have time.

Later never comes though. The reality of the situation is that we’re simply loading more stress onto an already overwhelmed and overloaded system. Unless we do something about it, the system is left with no choice but to crash. We know that, but we keep going anyway.

So, what do we do about it?

There’s plenty of people who advocate for putting down the phone and laptop and living your life without them. Problem is, they’re such a massive part of life and with technology advancements, and they’ll only become more so.

Therefore, it becomes about how you can interact with the technology to to enhance your life, but in a way that allows you to support your health and wellbeing.

And that involves changing the markers you use to determine where your health is at.

The best indicator of your health and wellbeing is your energy levels.

Your energy levels are a great source of vital information to help you determine what it is you need to support yourself on an ongoing basis.

Here’s 5 reasons to use your energy as the benchmark of your health:

  1. It’s unique to you. No one else has the same energy pattern as you do. Using its uniqueness gives you personalised information about what is going on for you.

  2. It gives you immediate feedback. Because your energy pattern is yours, you can tap into what’s happening for you in any moment and know exactly how you feel. You no longer need to rely on anyone else to tell you what you need.

  3. Use it to determine your exercise. Tapping into your energy levels allows you to create an up-to-the-minute exercise plan based on what you need right now. If your energy levels are low, you can exercise accordingly. If you have a bit more energy, you know you have energy spare to do something that’s a bit higher on the intensity scale.

  4. Get direct feedback about the types of nourishment you need. Your energy flow lets you know when you need to refuel and can also tell you what type of fuel you require in the minute. Take some time to get to know your unique energy flow and you can refuel regularly to accommodate what you need.

  5. Know when it’s time to rest. We all know sleep is important, but our energy levels let us know when we need more (or less) rest. When you’re tired, everything is way harder, so tuning in to your energy level can give you the information you need about how much sleep you need.

Get your energy right and your health and wellness will be on track

When you use your energy as the focus point of your health and wellness journey, you give yourself the opportunity to link directly to an immediate source of information that is personalised to you. And you don’t have to make an appointment, join a mailing list or get bombarded with information about solutions that ‘might’ work for you, because you have up to the minute information that is exactly what you need to know.

Once you know where your energy levels are at, it’s easy to create simple steps that give you what you need to turn your health and wellbeing in a new direction. You might also find that doing so improves your sleep, reduces your stress and limits your exposure to burnout.

So, let’s get to it: what’s your energy status right now… and what will you do to improve it today?
