Leonard Shen
Doctor of Chinese Energetic Medicine/Buddhist Lama
Len Shen is a Doctor, Lawyer, Buddhist Lama, and Priest. Continuing a long family lineage, he has dedicated his life to public service, with most of his career spent as an environmental advocate and corporate chief ethics and compliance officer, and now bringing the 3,000 year old healing tradition of Medical Qi Gong to patients and students in the West through his non-profit, www.californiaqigong.com.
Dr. Shen has lived on the one hand a traditional legal and corporate career. Graduating in the 1980s from Harvard College and Harvard Law School with honors, he spent the first two decades of his career as a U.S. Justice Department prosecutor of corporate polluters, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency official, U.S. Senate Environment Subcommittee Chief Counsel, and environmental law practitioner. He then became the Global Chief Compliance and Ethics Officer for GE Commercial Finance, American Express, PayPal, and Visa, where he led teams of hundreds of ethics officers around the world to promote integrity and compliance with the law by hundreds of thousands of corporate employees. He then became Chairman of the Board of two financial services companies in the U.S. and Canada, and served on the Board of Directors of multiple technology startups and homeless shelters in Silicon Valley.
In parallel with this conventional career, over 40 years ago Len began training in tai chi, yoga, meditation, reiki (Levels 1 and 2 certified), and Medical Qi Gong. He trained with Sifu John Leong in Seattle, Dr. Robert Smith in Washington, D.C., Sifu Harinder Singh, and for 5 years directly and intensively with Dr. Jerry Alan Johnson, the “father of medical qi gong in the West”, including clinical treatment of patients.
Dr. Shen received a Doctorate in Chinese Energetic Medicine, and also was ordained as a Buddhist Lama in the 1,800 year old lineage of the Zheng-Yi Celestial Master sect of Longu Shan in China, and ordained as a Christian Mystical Priest. He continues to train in Daoist, medical qi gong post-doctoral, Christian and Egyptian mysticism programs, so as to be able to bring to bear multiple powerful lineages to heal clients.
Dr. Shen and his colleagues presented their work at Harvard Medical School in May 2026, and continue to work with scientists and researchers to bring Qi Gong into Western medicine.
Dr. Shen’s passion and vision when he founded California Qi Gong is to bring the incredibly powerful healing techniques of Medical Qi Gong to patients and students – particularly those who would not otherwise have access to its benefits. Over the last several years he has taught qi gong pro bono at homeless shelters in California and Colorado, and to dementia ward patients, veterans, women cancer patients and battered/abused women.
In California Qi Gong, he has gathered some of the top medical qi gong healers in the United States (in which there are fewer than 1,000 certified medical qi gong doctors), all driven by the same vision of high integrity and ethical values. All net proceeds of his class fees are donated to a homeless shelter in the San Francisco Bay Area.
