When it comes to running your own business, truth be told, it can be an emotional rollercoaster!

As such, having the ability to stay afloat, be adequately prepared, and maintain self-control throughout the ups and downs of being a business owner is critical.

To do this, it helps to be armed with the tools that can help you manage your business, as well as the daily challenges you will inevitably face as a business owner. These include, of course, developing business acumen - which can, in most cases, only be acquired through higher education. Just as important, however, is being able to hone the effective self-care techniques that can help you look after your physical, mental, and emotional well-being while operating and managing your business.

To further understand how to manage the rollercoaster that is business ownership, stay with us as we discuss this in greater detail.

Preparing to Run Your Own Business Part One: Education, Qualifications, and Learnings

If you’re aspiring to become a successful business owner, obtaining a tertiary qualification in business will assist you immensely on your journey to success! Try completing an online Master's in Business Analytics, or any other tertiary business qualification, for instance, to help solidify and grow your existing knowledge, skills, and capabilities.

The best part? As well as solidifying your skills, and adding to your existing knowledge, pursuing a degree in the field of business will also enable you to network and make valuable contacts in the industry. Networking with your peers and academic tutoring staff could even open doors to career opportunities you may not even have previously considered!

Further, undergraduate or postgraduate study will also allow you to build your personal brand. By studying to complete a business qualification, you will quickly learn your strengths, as well as what you can bring to the table. These unique attributes will become especially evident when completing group assignments throughout your study period. You will learn a great deal about your personality, interpersonal skills, and how effectively you can work within a team. Are you most suited to a leadership role? Or perhaps, you work best in collaboration and cooperation with others. Either way, gaining a business qualification is the ideal way to identify your strengths as a business person, as well as the potential challenges you may encounter when setting yourself up to run your own business.

Preparing to Run Your Own Business Part Two: Mental and Emotional Preparation

Undoubtedly, pursuing a career as a successful business person takes a great deal of mental and emotional preparation. Indeed, running a business can be an emotional rollercoaster, and you need to be mentally prepared for this challenging ride.

When running your own business, not everything will go your way. At times, you’ll experience challenges, roadblocks, and issues that will test your capabilities more than ever before. That is why it is essential to develop self-care techniques, to look after both your physical and mental health. You can do this in the following ways:

Physical self-care techniques

Caring for your physical health and well-being is central to effectively looking after yourself as a business owner. Owning and managing a business takes a great deal of energy, and you will want to be feeling your absolute best to tackle the challenges of the day head-on.

An ideal way to increase and maintain high energy levels is to partake in some form of physical exercise daily. Moving your body doesn’t have to be overly strenuous, however. Aim for at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular movement every day - like a walk, swimming laps, or even a dance class. Complement this with a balanced, nutritious diet full of leafy green vegetables and lean proteins. Your physical health and energy levels will thank you for it!

Mental and emotional self-care techniques

Next, you also need to care for your mental health. Undoubtedly, being a business owner can be stressful, and you need to take adequate steps to look after your emotional well-being to avoid burnout, unnecessary stress, and mental fatigue.

Some great ways to look after your mental health are to engage in stress-reducing activities, such as meditation, yoga, and guided breathwork. Journaling your thoughts down onto paper can also help, as can keeping a digital diary that monitors your emotions. Most importantly, make the effort to schedule quality time with your friends and family, and ensure your social and emotional batteries remain charged.

If you’re aspiring to a successful career in business, you need to be sufficiently prepared for the emotional rollercoaster that is undoubtedly ahead of you.

Indeed, learning to navigate the ups and downs of being a business owner can be a challenge. However, if you develop the skills, knowledge, and acumen required to run your own business - you can succeed!
