Volkswagen Reports Battery Electric Vehicle Sales Are Powering Up

Volkwagen is reporting a boom in battery electric vehicles (BEVs) take up with Europe leading the way. The manufacturer has seen a 138% increase in deliveries in nine months to 293,100 vehicles and a 109% increase in unit delivery for Q3 2021 as compared to the previous year. It delivered 122,100 BEVs this quarter, which was more than a 6% share of the Global BEV total deliveries. This was, said the company, despite a shortage of semiconductors.

The manufacturer has seen a 138% increase in deliveries in nine months to 293,100 vehicles and a 109% increase in unit delivery for Q3 2021 as compared to the previous year. It delivered 122,100 BEVs this quarter, which was more than a 6% share of the Global BEV total deliveries. This was, said the company, despite a shortage of semiconductors.


By region, Europe was clearly in the lead, with 209,800 vehicles delivered and a share of 72%. The company was number two for BEV delivery in the US with 27,300 BEVs placed, which corresponded to 9% of its global BEV deliveries.

“As planned, we significantly accelerated the BEV market ramp-up in China in the third quarter, and we are on track to meeting our target for the year of delivering 80,000 to 100,000 vehicles of the ID. model family.”

China, however, saw a huge increase in demand with 28,900 BEVs delivered in Q3, compared with 18,300 in the first half of the year. In total, 47,200 BEVs were delivered by the end of September in China; which represents 16% of the Group’s global BEV deliveries.

Christian Dahlheim, Head of Group Sales said: “As planned, we significantly accelerated the BEV market ramp-up in China in the third quarter, and we are on track to meeting our target for the year of delivering 80,000 to 100,000 vehicles of the ID. model family.”


Breaking down the figures into brands - by the end of September, the core Volkswagen brand delivered 167,800 BEVs to customers, which was a share of 57%. This was followed by Audi with 52,800 vehicles (share of 18%); ŠKODA with 32,100 vehicles (share of 11%), Porsche with 28,600 vehicles (share of 10%) and SEAT with 8,800 vehicles (share of 3%). The top selling model was the Volkswagen ID.4.


Volkswagen is also reporting an increasing demand for vehicles with a plug-in hybrid drive (PHEVs). A total of 246.000 PHEVs were delivered in the first nine months. This is more than twice as many as in the prior-year period.
