8 Things You Should Know Before Starting to Biohack

Thinking about diving into the world of biohacking? Before you get started, here are the key things you need to know to optimize your health and performance safely and effectively.

Expert Panelists

1. Diagnose before optimizing

Before you start biohacking, understand that feeling better is not the same as repairing better. Many biohacks create short-term effects in energy, focus, or recovery, but they tell you very little about whether your tissues, joints, sleep, inflammation, or hormonal biology are actually improving. The real risk is not experimentation itself. It is chasing stimulation, data, and trends without understanding what your body is failing to recover from. Real regeneration is not a shortcut. It starts with diagnosis, biological understanding, and a system that can measure whether repair is truly happening.

2. Regulate first

Ahead of purchasing a single wellness gadget or starting to track every metric on a wearable device, you must understand that physical optimization without internal regulation can be counterproductive. Many individuals dive into the world of health trends by stacking cold plunges, rigid fasts, and complex routines onto an already depleted and chronically stressed body. If your nervous system registers your rigid new routine as an internal threat, the resulting stress response will actively work against the positive results you are trying to achieve. True health optimization begins with basic somatic safety and learning to listen to your internal biological cues before adding external digital noise. To optimize your health safely and effectively, you must build a foundation of genuine physical recovery before implementing advanced performance protocols.

3. Subconscious check

Is your subconscious on board with the biohack? Don't hack your body until you've checked your operating system. Your subconscious runs the show, dictating your underlying health and wellbeing beliefs. Before you begin, pause to connect with your deepest intuition via deep, heart-centered breathing to confirm safety and appropriateness to proceed. Then, communicate with your subconscious in a way it understands (kinesiology - muscle testing) to verify commitment. Ask: Is this truly for my highest good? Only proceed if your inner operating system is aligned.

4. Test your baseline

Before diving into the world of biohacking, it is essential to understand the basics of functional medicine to determine what is happening in your body and why. By establishing a clinical baseline through thoughtful testing of hormones, gut health, nutrient status, and inflammation, you can identify root causes and map your interventions precisely to your biological needs. Instead of guessing, use this high-leverage data and real-time monitoring to stabilize your circadian rhythm and identify personal inflammatory triggers. Integrating these biological foundations with advanced supplements and wearable technologies creates a resilient physiological baseline that allows your hacks to actually perform as intended. This synergy between clinical data and real-time data ensures you are not just chasing trends, but building on a verifiable biological reality.

5. Believe first

Before investing in your next biohacking wearable, supplement regimen, or cold plunge tub, understand that your mindset is a measurable variable in your health outcome, not something separate from it. Scientific research on the placebo effect confirms this: belief can activate real physiological pathways, meaning some portion of any intervention's effect comes from the confidence you bring to it. The reverse is equally true, known as the nocebo effect, where doubt about a protocol can produce the very side effects or failures you fear. This doesn't diminish the value of good tools and data; it means their effectiveness is amplified and/or limited by your beliefs about it. If you want deeper healing and real progress, don't just optimize your routine; optimize your belief that healing and progress are inevitable for you. Start there, and everything else you try will work better.

6. Build foundations

Before diving into biohacking, make sure your foundation is solid, because you can’t optimize a system that’s already overwhelmed. Start by stabilizing the basics: sleep, hydration, nutrition, movement, and stress regulation. Once those pillars are consistent, track your baseline so you know what’s actually changing when you introduce new tools or supplements. Biohacking should feel supportive, not stressful, so avoid stacking protocols just because they’re trending. When you approach it with curiosity instead of urgency, your body will tell you exactly what works and what doesn’t. Work with healthcare professionals if necessary.

7. Layer, don't replace

Right now, biohacking is trending – NAD injections, IV drips, and all sorts of advanced tools, but none of it will matter if you don’t have your foundations in place. Your body is already designed for success if you give it the basics: proper rest, gut health, movement, nutrition, sleep, and nervous system regulation. Most people skip over these essentials and run to the shiny quick fix, but the truth is biohacking only works when it’s layered on top of a body that’s already in harmony. Think of biohacking as an add-on to optimise what you already have available to you, not a substitute for it. The biggest advice I’d give anyone starting out is this: foundations first, then harmonise, and then optimise in line with what your body truly needs, depending on your goals and the demands of your lifestyle.

8. Master your breath

Before you begin biohacking, remember this: your most powerful technology is already within you, your breath. Every metric you want to optimize – energy, sleep, immunity, focus, and longevity – starts with how you breathe. As a breath expert, mindfulness facilitator, and author of Breathe With Me, I teach that conscious breathing isn’t just about oxygen; it’s about communication between the body, brain, and nervous system. No supplement or wearable can outperform a regulated breath. Start by mastering nasal breathing, slowing your exhale, and observing how your breath mirrors your emotions, because how you breathe is how you live. For those ready to take biohacking to a deeper, more embodied level, I offer workshops and private sessions designed to align your physiology and psychology through breath.
