Social media platform, Snapchat, has announced that it is launching an AI chatbot called My AI.

The new tool is powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT. In a statement, Snapchat explains: “My AI can recommend birthday gift ideas for your BFF, plan a hiking trip for a long weekend, suggest a recipe for dinner, or even write a haiku about cheese for your cheddar-obsessed pal.” It encourages users to “make My AI your own by giving it a name and customising the wallpaper for your Chat.”

The feature will initially only be available to paying Snapchat+ subscribers, but Snap CEO of Evan Spiegel told The Verge that expansion is planned. "The big idea is that in addition to talking to our friends and family every day, we're going to talk to AI every day," he said. "This is something we're well positioned to do as a messaging service."

In the announcement of My AI, the Snapchat team adds caveats including that users should not share any secrets with the tool nor rely on it for advice.
