The leotards and leggings are back as Meta has launched a new workout series for its VR headset with fitness queen Jane Fonda.

The series will launch for Meta Quest headsets on Christmas Day and was teased by a retro video in which Fonda herself asks viewers if “they’re ready for a new kind of workout!” The four-part series of fitness videos will be led by Fonda herself and promises an experience beyond anything any fitness fan has seen before. In the video, sweatband totting, spandex-clad participants are seen “smash[ing] glowing targets on glaciers, dodg[ing] jungle obstacles and box[ing] their way through tropical paradises, says The Drum.

“Most people, including myself, view cardio as a chore or something we have to endure,” said Sapna Champaneria Kirk, head of marketing at Supernatural, Meta. “With Jane Fonda, we’re showing that movement can actually be enjoyable.” Fonda will also team up with rapper Ludacris for a boxing session.

There is also reported to be a retro apparel line incoming for all those desperate to squeeze into some Day-Glo lycra or sport a pair of leg warmers. In January, the Meta team is promising “an experiential activation” event in Los Angeles, at which attendees will be transported (virtually) into a 1980s workout studio for a VR workout.

The move comes as Meta pushes to diversify its VR headset audience beyond gaming. As well as fitness, the Meta team is marketing its use for virtual meetings, education purposes, creative tools as well as even just watching movies.
