We interviewed Dianne McKim, CEO Precious Stones Coaching and Creator of “THE Team™” Program to learn why she is passionate about coaching and the benefits employees and employers receive when they incorporate coaching into their organizations and their lives. Read on to see what Dianne had to share.

Tell us why you decided to become a Coach?

I loved my long career in Corporate America. I worked with some great leaders along the way, but I also had experiences with those who needed refinement. I noticed the challenges employees experienced when the focus of the company was too much on the bottom line and not enough on the people who help bring in the bottom line. Too often, teams were just groups of people put together to solve situations without enough thought given to making sure the group became a cohesive team. Things were out of balance.

In addition to my corporate experiences, I have had many personal situations that brought great heartache and struggles that really caused me to flounder. I had to learn how to overcome and rise above the difficulties.

With my business background and my personal experiences, I was moved to embark on a new journey: to start a coaching practice so I could make an impact on people’s lives. In everything I do, my heart and passion is to help people, leaders, and teams to:

  • Discover for themselves what they are passionate about

  • Step into their true calling so they live their best every day

  • Thrive in their current situation or position regardless of the challenges they may face

  • Live with the greatest confidence in who they are and what they have to offer

Imagine knowing who you are and what you are passionate about. Imagine you are living out your true purpose in life and thriving at it. Imagine being recognized for your amazing talents, skills, and abilities, whether it be in your professional or your personal life. This is my passion for every client I work with. This is the “Why” behind what I do.

What do you believe needs to change for employers and employees to have stronger cohesiveness and less turnover?

So much has changed in our world, and old ways of doing business are no longer serving employers or employees well. I believe there needs to be a common goal, and it is critical for both sides to take new approaches to strengthening the relationship between them.

There has been a lot of reporting on The Great Resignation. People want to work where they are appreciated. They want to contribute in meaningful ways. They want a better life and work balance that includes more flexibility. The Predictive Index did a survey of executives in November 2021, and found the top two reasons employees are leaving their companies are inflexible work options/hours and lack of personal/professional development opportunities.

Learning what makes your employees tick, how they function at their peak, what their strengths are, and what benefits are most important to them will go a long way in helping employees feel appreciated, that they are contributing and growing in their development while enjoying the flexibility they need. When your employees are happier their productivity increases, which leads to greater growth for the company.

Employees need to help their employers by taking the time to share with their leadership what motivates them and offering suggestions for possibilities and solutions. This approach will go a long way to help strengthen their relationship.

Incorporating coaching, whether it be team, group, or individual coaching, helps foster professional and personal development. It also helps employees and employers create deeper connections, and increases their confidence and happiness. When both sides look to each other to build cohesiveness, it can result in less turnover, slowing the mass exodus in The Great Resignation.

What does Precious Stones Coaching offer to help foster this?

There are many ways to help companies and employees on this journey toward a common goal. With all my years in business, along with the investment I have made in my coaching certifications and training, I bring a unique perspective to the table. I understand the challenges small to medium-sized businesses face, especially with all that is changing due to Covid. I know that too often, these businesses cannot cover all the aspects needed to retain and onboard great talent. They don’t have the bandwidth to truly understand the value that each person brings to the company.

This is where Precious Stones Coaching steps in. I work one on one with leaders and individual contributors in small to medium-sized companies, helping each to work through any difficult or challenging situations they may be facing. Throughout the coaching sessions, the goal is always to have the client arrive at great discoveries that lead to getting unstuck and moving forward. As their coach, I challenge them, encourage them, and help them dig in and uncover the heart of the issues or potential issues they face.

Through the integration of strong coaching, each person, group, and/or team can accomplish goals and achieve the greatest success.

Tell us about “THE Team™” Program.

Recognizing the success of a team must have full leadership support, the right people in the right roles, and an action plan to achieve the goals of the team, I have designed a unique proprietary program called “THE Team™” Program.

Working with company leadership, we uncover the overall goal of the team and any existing gaps, issues, or challenges. One of the key differentiators and success factors of this program is that leadership must agree to provide what is needed for the team to meet their goals.

Once the leadership is in agreement, we utilize specific assessments with both leadership and the team members, identifying their unique talents and abilities. We document areas that need to be addressed, such as skill gaps (i.e. too many with a particular skill and no one with other necessary skills). The CliftonStrengths Assessment and/or the DiSC® Assessment are utilized in this program, providing incredible insights that help the leadership and the team, as well as the individual team members, function at their best.

Working with the team, we create a go-forward plan that indicates how the team will accomplish the leadership goals, deliver on their defined objectives, and have the greatest productivity and efficiency. Presenting the plan and recommendations to the leadership, they then work together to implement the action steps necessary to making the go-forward plan a reality. With both sides coming together, there is greater success for all!

What else would you like to say to those reading this interview?

Never before has there been a better time to invest in yourself, your company, your peers, and your employees. You have a choice: you can complain and stay frustrated with the lack of talent and The Great Resignation or you can do something about it. Especially in these days with so many working remotely, retaining a coach shows how much you care and that you are willing to invest in their future as well as the future of the company.
