There is much discussion in today society about balancing body, mind and spirit for a better quality of life, but it seems that most of the information presented is focused on the body and mind connection, and not so much on the spiritual dimension. Maybe because the concept may appear impractical and esoteric, or too sensitive of a subject in a business environment. However, if we aspire to the notion that our external environment and the way we interact with the world is just a reflection of our interior state of being, the third leg of the tripod (spirit) on which body-mind and spirit connection rest, is just as important if not more important than the first two. In this article, I will expand on how spirituality can play a significant role in the business world by enhancing personal growth, ethical decision-making, and purpose-driven organizations.

Personal growth

Personal growth rests on the foundation of self-awareness, which is focused on self-knowledge. Spiritual practices like meditation and mindfulness encourage self-reflection, thus helping business professionals better understand their own strengths, weaknesses, and motivations. In business language, this enhanced self-awareness provides the fluidity (being nimble and adaptable) to take advantage of new opportunities as their arise, while minimizing unnecessary risks. This is basically a S.W.O.T. analysis at the highest personal level which can then be brought to bear at the leadership and decision-making level for better outcomes and richer, more satisfying personal and business life.

Ethical leadership in business world

A spiritual outlook at the personal level can greatly influence the business world since it strongly emphasizes values like integrity and fairness. The successful businesses of today are already being led by leaders with a strong spiritual foundation where ethical business practices are prioritized. In his book “From Good to Great” Collins provided substantial empirical evidence to show that great companies focus on leaders that espouse integrity and a value-based decision-making. This environment fosters trust among employees, clients and stakeholders, thus ensuring the long-term viability and success of the business.

Purpose-driven work

Covid19 ushered in a whole new sense of shifting loyalty away from the company and towards the individual. Spiritual practices help connect with a deeper sense of purpose, and when personal values are aligned with professional goals, the individual becomes more resilient and able to manage stress. A company that can grasp and adapt to this changing dynamic can align accordingly to improve job satisfaction and motivate teams thus retaining good, loyal employees.

Positive organizational culture

This type of culture will always beat strategy as it rests on a strong foundation of people-centric decision making. A spiritually aware leader can create a positive business environment of inclusion and respect. A positive organizational culture boosts morale, engagement and ultimately productivity. Many companies are now incorporating mindfulness training to improve employee well-being and productivity, while others inspire employees’ loyalty and community trust by focusing on environmental sustainability and other purpose-driven vision and mission statements.

Conclusion

In the body-mind and spirit equilibrium, there are many benefits to individuals, companies and businesses when a spiritual focus is used as the foundation for health and wellness, personal growth and business success that is both ethical and purpose-driven. Geopolitical and socio-economic forces are now forcing unprecedent changes upon us. The way we respond to such forces will shape our future for better or worse in the foreseeable future.
