As a woman standing at the very point in midlife, I know firsthand what it’s like to feel that persistent urge for something more, something deeper than career accomplishments or checked-off goals. This longing to lead a life aligned with one’s core values, rather than external measures of success, is natural and, in many ways, inevitable. This shift doesn’t happen overnight, and it isn’t always easy to navigate. Yet, when that gentle but persistent itch for change appears, I’ve learned it’s vital to pay attention. Growth, as challenging as it can be, isn’t just a possibility; it’s a calling. And while that journey is uniquely personal, it’s one we’re all capable of embracing. By honoring this transition, we open ourselves up to a life that feels more purposeful and grounded, a life that aligns with who we truly are.

Embracing this season of transition and growth isn’t just an option; it’s a powerful opportunity to realign with who you are and who you’re becoming. By leaning into this change, women in midlife can discover a renewed sense of purpose, paving the way for a deeply satisfying and meaningful life.

Whenever I am looking to change an aspect of my life, or to embrace change if it is already sufficient pull for me to evolve, There is a quote I like to refer to,

"Wherever you go, there you are." – Jon Kabat Zinn

This simple yet profound truth reminds us that no matter where life takes us, our most significant ally—or obstacle—will always be ourselves. Often, when life’s challenges seem relentless, it’s easy to blame circumstances, the people around us, or the environment. We think, “If only this changed, then everything would be better.” But in time, we come to realize that true wisdom doesn’t come from external factors; it lies within us.

This wisdom, however, isn’t always easy to access. Sometimes it takes a trusted guide or coach to help us lean into it. But even with that support, the journey of self-discovery is personal, and it's about learning to connect with our inner selves in a way that allows us to not only listen to our deepest insights but also to act on them. Tuning in to this inner compass is often difficult—it requires honesty, courage, and vulnerability, making it one of the hardest things we can do. But as is often the case, the hard things are also the right things. Embracing this journey isn’t about finding answers elsewhere; it’s about unearthing the strength, clarity, and wisdom that have been within us all along. From this perspective, change and growth become less about the world around us and more about transforming from within. This is the foundation for true, lasting growth and the first step toward leading our lives with purpose.

Through years of deep inner work, I’ve crafted an Inner Wisdom Toolkit that has become my guide. Sometimes I draw on the entire toolkit, and other times, I only need a piece of it to help me navigate and grow to the next level. I’d love to share this toolkit with you, so you can use it however feels right for you in different moments of your journey.

1. Embrace quiet moments

Set aside time each day for quiet reflection, whether it’s a few minutes of morning meditation, a walk in nature, or simply sitting in silence. Embracing solitude can help you connect to that inner voice. Trust that this time is yours and prioritize it, even if it means setting boundaries with family or work. Over time, you’ll find clarity in these quiet spaces.

2. Journal with purpose

Journaling is a powerful way to process your thoughts and uncover patterns or desires. When you’re feeling that “itch” for change, use your journal as a conversation with yourself. Begin by asking open questions: “What do I truly want?” or “What am I resisting?” or ‘’ What no longer feels right?’’ Free-writing, where you let thoughts flow without editing, can often reveal surprising insights.

3. Engage in regular self-check-ins

It’s essential to regularly assess where you’re at on your journey. Try setting a monthly “check-in” with yourself to evaluate your goals, progress, and any changes in how you’re feeling about your path. Acknowledge both your growth and the areas that may need more attention. Remember, the goal isn’t perfection; it’s staying aligned with your evolving self. The more you check in, the more you find yourself having regular check ins even on your day-to-day life.

4. Visualize your future self

This is a powerful one! Imagine the woman you are becoming. Visualizing your future self can provide a compass, especially during uncertain times. What does she value? How does she feel about her life? What decisions does she make? Reconnecting with this vision regularly can give you a sense of direction, keeping you motivated to grow in ways that serve you.

5. Lean on a support network or trusted guide

Sometimes, getting a perspective from a coach, mentor, or even a like-minded friend can help you connect to your wisdom. If you find it challenging to act on what you know to be true, reaching out for support can make all the difference. Share your journey with someone you trust, or join a community of women on similar paths; you’ll find strength in knowing you’re not alone. My Sherising Community is a great community for you to join other women in similar journeys like yours here.

6. Act with courage, even in small steps

Transformation isn’t about massive changes overnight. Small, courageous steps build momentum over time. If there’s a change you know you need to make—whether it’s setting boundaries, taking on a new challenge, or saying “no” to what drains you, start small but stay consistent. Each act of courage brings you closer to a life led by your inner wisdom. The truth is, women who are conscious enough to read this article already possess the knowledge needed to evolve into a better version of themselves. What we need to focus on now is bridging the knowing-doing gap by taking small, consistent steps. Rely on your discipline and let it carry you forward!

7. Practice self-compassion on the journey

Embracing change is rarely a straight line. Allow yourself grace through setbacks or moments of doubt. The path to self-discovery and growth is often one of trial and error. Be patient, celebrate your efforts, and remember that every step, even a backward one, is a part of your journey.

In closing, embracing change and growth in midlife is not just about navigating the challenges ahead; it's about celebrating the opportunity to discover who we truly are. Each step you take, no matter how small, brings you closer to a life filled with purpose and alignment with your core values. Trust in your inner wisdom, utilize the tools shared, and remember that this journey is uniquely yours. You have the strength and resilience to create a life that resonates deeply with you. So, lean into this transformative season, and let it guide you toward a more fulfilling and meaningful existence. You are not alone on this path; together, we can uplift and inspire one another as we embrace the richness of our journeys.
