Frederick Cortez Lee Jr – Turning Ideas Into Impact

Frederick Cortez Lee Jr did not follow a typical path into business. He built his career by solving a problem he saw in real time. Families were struggling. They were working hard, but many lacked clear direction. That gap became his starting point.

“I saw a major problem in my community,” Lee says. “People were trying, but they did not have a strategy they could understand and follow.”


That idea led him to launch Debt Elimination Group, Inc in 1998 in Fayetteville, North Carolina. What began as a simple concept would later grow into a multi-state operation built almost entirely through trust and word of mouth.

Lee’s early years were not easy. He faced a lack of experience in key areas like finance, marketing, and technology. Instead of seeing that as a barrier, he leaned on personal values.


“My father taught me to be honest, work hard, and do right by people,” he explains. “I knew that if I stayed consistent with that, I could figure the rest out.”


He also carried lessons from growing up in East St. Louis, Illinois. At times, he was told he would not succeed in business because of his background.


“I heard that people like me do not win,” he says. “But I stayed focused on doing things the right way. Over time, that made the difference.”


That mindset became a foundation for how he approached both business and leadership.


Why an education-first approach became his Core strategy


From the start, Lee chose a different model. He focused on teaching rather than selling. His goal was to help people understand concepts so they could make informed decisions on their own.


“We sold the idea of becoming debt free through education,” Lee says. “When people understand the strategy, they take ownership of their results.”


This approach shaped the company culture. It created an environment where clients felt involved and informed, not pressured. It also led to strong referral growth.


“We did not rely on advertising,” he explains. “We relied on helping people. When you do that well, they tell others.”


Scaling debt elimination group across 32 states


The company’s growth accelerated through the early 2000s. Starting in Georgia, it expanded into more than 32 states. This growth was driven almost entirely by word of mouth.


One of the most notable periods came between 2005 and 2007. In just 30 months, the company funded over $1.3 billion in loan volume and supported more than 3,400 clients.


What stands out most to Lee is not just the scale, but the outcomes.


“Out of all those clients, not one went into foreclosure or default,” he says. “That showed me the system we built was working.”


This period helped solidify his reputation as someone who could execute on a large scale while maintaining consistency.


Building high-performing teams without traditional barriers


Lee also focused heavily on people. He believed success should not depend on formal education or background.


“We promoted people based on their drive,” he says. “If you had the will to win, you could succeed.”


Under his leadership, dozens of team members reached significant income milestones. Some earned over $50,000, while others reached six and even seven figures.


Recognition was part of the culture. High performers were rewarded with luxury items, including watches and cars. But for Lee, the deeper impact was personal growth.


“I look back at the people who became successful through our system,” he says. “That is what matters most to me.”


Overcoming challenges and staying grounded


Like any business journey, Lee faced setbacks. He had to learn quickly and adapt to changing conditions. He relied on structure and discipline to stay on track.


“I used KPI trackers and focused on the right people and the right strategies,” he explains. “You have to stay organised if you want to grow.”


He also credits mentors and influences for shaping his thinking. Figures like Sandy Weill, Jamie Dimon, and Les Brown played a role, along with close supporters in his personal and professional life.


Despite success, Lee emphasises the importance of staying grounded.


“I stay humble,” he says. “No matter what you achieve, that mindset keeps you focused.”


What drives Frederick Cortez Lee Jr today


Over time, Lee evolved his business into a boutique financial services marketing firm. But his core focus has not changed. He remains committed to people and community impact.


His work has often centred on military families and underserved communities. He believes opportunity should be accessible to anyone willing to work for it.


“The will to win is the equaliser,” he says. “It can overcome a lot of things people think are limitations.”


Today, what motivates him most is seeing others succeed.


“When people around you reach their goals, that is the real reward,” Lee says. “It means you built something that works.”


The leadership philosophy behind his success


Lee describes himself as a servant leader. For him, leadership is not about control. It is about support.

“You put the team and the families first,” he says. “If you do that, you will always win.”


That philosophy has shaped his career from the beginning. It is also what continues to define his impact.
