Dr. Kim Dang is a visionary self-made entrepreneur and actress with Vietnamese roots, based in NYC. A former Yale Applied Mathematics professor, Kim transitioned from academia to the world of film. With degrees in Film Science and Mathematics from Zurich University, Kim founded Dark Runner, a company with a mission to inspire and empower through storytelling, illuminating true narratives that unlock human potential and guide individuals on their own transformative journeys. Her coaching programs are designed for decision-makers navigating rough and ever-changing territories. Her film company section specializes in biopics and legacy films.
Her Mission is: "to inspire and empower through storytelling, illuminating true narratives that unlock human potential and guide individuals on their own transformative journeys."

Can you tell us more about your work and how you ended up where you are today?
My journey has been a tapestry of diverse experiences, each contributing to where I am today. While pursuing my PhD in Random Matrix Theory, I was also passionately engaged with the arts, running an international short film festival in Switzerland. This dual pursuit of mathematics and film reflects my lifelong love for both analytical thinking and storytelling.
During my time as a professor of Applied Mathematics at Yale, I initiated and ran a one-year personal development program called FLY (Future Leadership at Yale), designed to empower individuals to reach their fullest potential. This experience deepened my understanding of guiding others on their transformative journeys, which later inspired my pivot from academia to the world of film.
I created my own coaching method, where I inspire and empower individuals through our coaching program, 'The Art Of Starting Over,' helping people envision and create their best lives, especially at a challenging moment in their lives. In tandem, I founded Dark Runner, a boutique media and film production company focused on telling impactful biopics and legacy stories. Both of these ventures align with my mission to unlock human potential through storytelling, encouraging others to see themselves as the protagonist in their own transformative narratives.
Connecting these dots from mathematics and academia to media and film has been an incredible adventure, and I'm driven by the opportunity to share meaningful stories with the world."
What kind of audience do you target your business towards?
My business targets a dynamic and diverse audience. In my coaching business, Quiet Wealth Creation, I focus on decision-makers who are driven to serve and deliver. These individuals often seek a structured and efficient approach to integrating change, and they appreciate my strategic methodologies offered through 'The Art Of Starting Over' program.
Conversely, Dark Runner, my legacy film business, caters to clients who wish to tell their own stories in film format. This venture is designed for those who value the power and artistry of storytelling, particularly through biopics and legacy films that capture and convey profound personal narratives.
Overall, my dual ventures engage individuals passionate about both personal and professional growth and those who cherish impactful storytelling that resonates on a deep level.
If you had to explain who you are without mentioning your job, achievements, or where you’re from, how would you describe yourself?
I am a passionate storyteller fueled by exuberance and a deep appreciation for beauty and creativity. With an open heart, I embrace gratitude and forgiveness, knowing they pave the way for authentic connections and genuine love. Guided by a commitment to authenticity, I thrive on exploring the art of life and the stories that illuminate the human experience. I continuously seek to inspire and empower, drawing on the transformative power of narratives to unlock potential and foster meaningful growth within myself and others.

How do you recharge your creativity when it feels like the well has run dry?
When my creative well feels depleted, I find renewal through my travels and by connecting with diverse people from various cultures and backgrounds. Speaking five languages and having had careers in different industries, along with being exposed to different cultures already as a child, allows me to engage easily with others, enriching my perspective and opening myself to inspiration. My curiosity fuels my creativity, driven by the stories and experiences I encounter.
However, when I do find myself feeling creatively dry, I embrace stillness and reflection. Meditation is a tool I’ve always used, as my mom was a Buddhist nun, and I became a Buddhist under Thich Nhat Hanh at the age of 15. I also understand that ideas flow to me in harmony with the Universal rhythm. In these moments of quiet acceptance, I remind myself that creativity is a gift, not entirely my own. By trusting this flow, I’ve been able to return to it fairly quickly.
What are your current goals for your business?
In my coaching business, my primary goal is to expand our reach and make 'The Art Of Starting Over' program accessible to a broader audience of decision-makers seeking transformative personal and professional change. I aim to refine and enhance our strategic methodologies to offer even more tailored and impactful support.
For my boutique media and film production company, I am focused on producing compelling biopics and legacy films that not only entertain but also inspire and resonate with audiences on a deep emotional level. I aspire to act in these films, providing an opportunity for both myself and other talented actors to showcase a broad range of performance skills. Additionally, I aim to grow my friendships with filmmakers who share a commitment to authenticity and innovation.
Across both ventures, my overarching ambition is to inspire and unlock human potential through storytelling, fostering connections and change that echo within individuals and communities alike."
If you could add one chapter to your life story that hasn’t happened yet, what would it be titled and why?
EVOLVED THINKING: In this chapter, I embark on a journey to develop an international school curriculum dedicated to teaching students the art of thinking. As a former professor, the innovative educational approach would empower students to not only absorb information but to integrate their learning into a personalized framework that encourages systematic thinking and creativity. By fostering a supportive environment where students can explore diverse perspectives and formulate their own unique viewpoints, we could inspire a new generation to harness their intellectual capabilities and navigate the world with confidence and insight.
When someone thinks of you years from now, what’s the one thing you hope they remember?
I'd love people to randomly drop in commentaries like: 'Dr. Kim Dang coached that person,' or 'Kim told this story about so-and-so who did this and that,' or 'Remember the movie about that character who was challenged with this and ended up doing that?' Always referring back to themes of embracing one's true potential, living authentically, and defying the odds. I hope and aim to illuminate the path to self-discovery, sparking a transformation and leaving a legacy of empowerment and creativity long after people remember my name.
