Margôt is a clinical hypnotherapist, coach, speaker, radio show host and writer. She has published books on life and love and created transformational programs for clients who want to discover how to live their lives, unimpeded by any issues that have blocked their success.

She has spent many years pursuing what she refers to as ‘how life works and just how much power we have to control what shows up in our lives’. She teaches that we first need to identify and eliminate any subconscious blocks so we can move beyond the things that hold us back.

Margôt is trained in Transformational Therapy (RTT) a life-changing therapy which reveals the root cause of a problem in one session. Once that’s identified the RTT process deals with it and rewrites the program running in the subconscious mind. She says building on a strong clear foundation of self-worth is the key to future success.

Margôt de Cotesworth, Clinical Hypnotherapist, Coach, Writer & Speaker

Margôt, you’ve spent your life pursuing what makes us tick and what makes life work for us. What’s your purpose and mission?

My mission, without question, is that we should discover who we really are in terms of our potential and that we take up our power to drive the outcomes of our life. To me, it’s about personal empowerment.

My therapy business is called Flip The Switch. I say to people I don’t do ‘talk therapy’, I do ‘Change Your Life Therapy’. RTT does that and my wrap-around teaching shows people how to change the way they think, speak and behave so they can live the life they want on an ongoing, daily basis. My belief is that we should choose what we want in life and not live by default just because that is what is, in that moment. Our past does not equal our future. It never has and it never will unless we say it can.

We are in our own ‘choosing seat’ but we have abdicated our power to whatever random things present themselves ‒ ill health, crummy relationships, issues that keep us stuck, tiny visions of our lives. It is so wrong and sad. It is time for us to stand up and say “no, I want more!”

Apart from one to one clients, you also run luxury retreats. But how would a retreat help someone who wanted to say “No, I want more!”?

I think one of the most wonderful benefits of a retreat is to be able to withdraw from the whirl of day-to-day life and join like minded people to really enable focus on what you want to change.

We start with The Self to make sure a client’s self-perception is really clear and strong. That’s creating a foundation that anything can be built on. It’s like erecting a building. If the foundation is good, you can go as high as you like. If it’s not good and strong, nothing you try to build on top will stand. The retreat environment is totally devoted to the issue clients want to reset. Imagine the power of devoting a number of days to just that. Plus, of course, we hold the retreats in gorgeous establishments and locations, with glorious food and wine ‒ all that our clients expect of the word luxury. The retreats are life-changing.

Is there any particular area of your work that you are especially passionate about?

Yes! And this relates to our perception of self. One of the things I am most passionate about is restoring ourselves to perfect health. And I include achieving and maintaining our ideal weight as a matter of perfect health. If we don’t have our health, nothing else really matters. Sadly, we accept so little in terms of our expectation to influence our health ‒ we look at diet, we look at lifestyle, we might even look at ‘mindset’ but we need to look at our subconscious because the answers lie there.

What if it’s been a mistake for us to be so accepting of the issues we are living with? What if we could learn how to step into our own ability to be well? We need to understand that our mind is in charge. Our mind rules our body and we need to start there.

Tell me more about what you call your ‘wrap-around teaching’.

I’d love to. I have written a little free book and my mission is to get a copy to a million people, just to get the message out. The book is called Tell A Different Story and it’s an incredibly quick read. The message is that we talk to and about ourselves in a particular way ‒ telling a story if you like. If we don’t like or want something we have in our lives, then we need to change it by telling a different story.

Imagine you had a genie sitting on your shoulder and he was obliged to do as you say because that is his job. If you realized that your words were going to solidify into reality when he heard them ‒ wouldn’t you make sure you told a story of what you wanted and not what you didn’t?

Our words have power. One of my programs is called Take My Word For It ‒ Everyday. It’s about choosing the words we use because they have incredible creative power. Did you know the word Abracadabra means ‘by my words, I create’.

None of what I’m saying is new ‒ we’ve just fallen into a kind of dumbed down acceptance, believing that whatever life delivers us is out of our control. That’s rubbish.

One of my favourite quotes is “Until we make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate” ‒ Carl Jung.

So what’s your backstory Margôt? How did you get from where you were to where you are now?

My background is in food and design which I still love but then I discovered writing and the books I wrote have formed the basis of my year long programs because I wanted people to be supported in their quest to make their lives better by receiving a message every day for a year. Most of my books are based on the philosophy that words are transformational and that we must choose to speak what we want and not what we don’t.

Another huge influence in my life is The Word’. This is what I call the messages I receive from The Universe. These messages are life-affirming, encouraging and directional. I receive a lot of answers and guidance for me ‒ and for others by request.

We all have a life journey. When I feel things are moving too slowly for me or if I hit a roadblock or an apparent misdirection in my life I deal with it by saying that everything I have learnt and experienced has contributed to the strong place I stand in now. That applies to all of us as long as we determine not to see ourselves as victims. You can’t be a victim unless you allow it. I do not allow it.

When I first heard the fabulous Marisa Peer (founder of RTT) speak, I knew that was the missing piece of the puzzle for my work, so I trained with her. The success of the subconscious work RTT offers, combined with the philosophy of my programs and The Word makes for an incredibly powerful, complete picture for changing people’s lives for good because it touches on every aspect of who we are. It blows the lid off what’s possible for us. I say ‒ let’s be unlimited and let’s rule in our own lives.

What are your five best tips on how to build a life you want?

My five tips would be:

  • Start with you—we have to sort our stuff before we can move with speed and grace into achieving what we want in life. I call it Inside, Alongside, Outside. That is ‒ getting ourselves on track first then, secondly, Alongside which is our circle which is our family, friends, colleagues and those in our personal world. Then we are able to go beyond that and change our world for good.

  • Expect what you want—don’t think and talk about what you don’t want. Imagine you have and are already what you want. Always talk to yourself around the story you choose and not the one you don’t. Remember your genie is listening.

  • Give what you want—if you want love ‒ show a little love. If you want money ‒ give. If you want connection - offer it to others. Life works like a boomerang. If you don’t send it out, how can it come back to you?

  • Never, ever give up—This is my personal mantra. There is no other way for me. Never give up on what you believe, what you want, what you are prepared to invest in and work for. Just don’t let it go. One of my favourite sayings is ‘Plan A. Because if plan B was any good, it’d be plan A.

  • See life as being your friend—People say ‘The Universe has your back’. It doesn’t matter if you really know that, just say it anyway and you will begin to shift your thinking. You will begin to see that things do work for you, people do care, opportunities are there and life is good. If you are going to talk to yourself anyway (and we all do) make sure you are telling yourself something worthy.

So, what’s the next big goal or project for Margot de Cotesworth? What’s driving you forward?

I know I have something important and life enriching to offer people. That lights me up. I know people need to fix the things in life that keep them stuck, sick or feeling small and I love that I can show them how to change that. I believe we all have an innate ability to recognise truth, to clarify and to see the essence of something. We need to learn how to apply that to everything in our lives and just allow all the unwanted, unnecessary, unhelpful stuff to fall away.

I have a radio program coming up which I’m so excited about. It’ll be a fortnightly advice show called ‘Ask Margot’. Listeners will send their problems and questions and I’ll give them perfect answers. 🙂

I’m also going to be speaking at a women’s prison about self-esteem ‒ walking them through my I Am Amazing program about self-perception and self-worth. My vision is to have this program available in prisons, schools, business and government… everywhere. Now that would ‘change the world for good’. That is one of my favourite statements ‒ outrageously big, but that’s what I like.

I plan to spend more time on speaking engagements because that is a great way to spread the word that change is not only possible but available to us.

Another project of mine that I’m wildly enthusiastic about and it is so relevant to how the world is at the moment is The Ball’s in Your Court. I love this. It’s totally non-profit. The master plan is for each of us to do One Good Thing, Everyone, Every day. It can be anything you choose from helping an elderly person across the street to planting a tree to smiling at a stranger. If just one person brought one other person on board each day and that person brought another person in, do you know that in only 19 days we would have a million people doing one good thing every day. And we’d have the whole world in around a month.

Can you see the power of that?! It would be a perfect demonstration of the cumulative power of good. It’s what connection, caring and collaboration can do. ‘The Ball’ is our world. It’s in our court. Let’s pass it on. Let’s play ball…

Do you have one last word, Margôt?

I do, thank you. When I finish a session with a client I like to give them what I call a Power Blessing. It’s like an affirmation on steroids or an infallible intention (Infallible means never failing; always effective). So here we go:

“By the spectacular power in you that is undeniable, you now grant yourself a life of joy, of meaning, health, wealth, love and perfect self-expression. And this life will be yours from this moment until the end of time.”
